Foot Surgery: The Aftermath (warning- not for the faint of heart
Posted by clawhammer, 12-01-2008, 09:24 PM clawhammer is offline

I love to hike, but my feet don't. They've had some problems over the years, and i've decided to fix them. These are some shots of the aftermath of my surgery, some taken by me, others by the nurse.

While there's no gushing blood or anything, if you don't like metal and skin in contact, you may wish to look away.

First, a view of my arch before the surgery:

Now, an X-ray of what they've done:

The gory details:

Suffice to say, I won't be lugging my 4x5 around anytime soon!

Hope I didn't gross y'all out.

I hate to say it, but the before picture of your foot looks a little bit like my feet. I think they call it "cavus"...the reference being to a horses hoof. For years mine have caused me chronic plantar fasciatis and more recently numbness and pain at the ball of the foot.

I talked to my surgeon about 8 weeks ago about my sore feet and managed to escape with a prescription for orthotics as an initial solution. The doc and I did agree to some work on a crooked toe that was done on 7 November. Sorry no pictures, though the incisions looked pretty gross.

I am still hobbling around in my post-operative shoe, though it is feeling a lot better. Good luck on a speedy recovery and a successful outcome.

Steve

BTW...am I correct in concluding that they fused certain of your joints in the heal and metatarsals?

Yup. They fused the inner-most joint to lower the arch (sorry, I never too medical terminology). They sliced the heel and moved the whole thing over- that's why I've got the two monster screws sticking out. I get pain in the ball of my foot after running or hiking for a long time, so I decided this would be the best solution. Here's hoping you don't have to do something this dramatic!

Thanks for the well wishes

I have a similar condition called "Tarsil Coalition" which is more along the lines of a fallen arch due to bones fused in the ankle that shouldn't be. I got orthotics about a year ago and they have helped a lot, but I'm considering surgery. Just got to find a time when I can stay off my feet for 8 weeks....ugh

Thanks for sharing the pics, here's to a speedy recovery and a friendly physical therapist (the mean ones I like to call physical tourturists)
