Couple of portraits
Posted by Falcons, 01-06-2009, 04:41 AM Falcons is offline

An impromptu portrait session with one of my boys, he really likes to work the camera.
Lighting is via reflectors and a bounced flash - lens used was the Pentax SMC K 55mm F1.8.

CC most welcome & thanks for looking.

I like the second one for some reason a little better. Maybe the expression, just wish the top of his head was not cut off.

Thanks for the CC - I know what you mean about the head, I actually cropped it there, this was an impromptu session as I wanted to experiment with using reflectors as the lighting, so his hair was sort of sticking up at the back (been in the pool all day) and it sort of looked funny.

Really I wanted to see what reaction if any I would get for the lighting.

Looks pretty good. A couple of comments.
1) the first image appears to have the collar of the shirt sharper than the eyes. I realize it's a manual lens so that's a bit tougher to work with especially if he's moving much. Sharp eyes are really an important aspect of this type of shot.
2) in both the light is very even on all sides. It appears you had a slightly stronger light source on the right side (His left) and that is fine but you might want to lessen the light on the opposite side a bit more. Create some shadow detail which will bring out the features and create more depth in the image.

But if you wanted to turn this into a Hi-Key shot, this lighting would be perfect. Just boost the exposure in PP 1-2 stops and maybe try B&W. With this light, it could be very dramatic.

Overall very good, tweak it a little and you've got a winning setup.
