Motorcycle Ice Racing

I never photographed any fast moving subjects like this before and wasn't sure what to expect. I tagged along with a friend as the "photographer" to a lake in New York Saturday. I made no promises to the group. I was pleasantly surprised when I edited them in Lightroom.

I think I shot about 400 and ended up keeping about 280. I collected some emails and posted them on my Zenfolio site for the guys to download. I'll be paid in beer.

Here are a few of my favorites. All shot with K20D and DA 55-300.

The rest are here if interested in this kind of stuff... http://jeffery.zenfolio.com/p624006243

Nice series.

Don't those motorcycle have metal studs on the tires?

Woo Hoo!!! Now that looks like a heap of fun....provided you stayed upright and well away from those tyres if you did happen to fall.

These are very good shots, that 55-300 seems to be gathering quite a fan club.

Thanks for sharing.
Cheers

I really hadn't even considered the 55-300 till I saw these... I just spent the last hour reading up on it, seems to be a very decent lens at a great price.

Nice photos, by the way, 1 and 5 especialy.

Been wanting to ice race for quite a while... don't get much in WA... looks like a riot.

Years ago, I helped a guy with his ice racer - an old Datsun 510 - and he ran 1/4" bolts, about 1" long, as the "studs" - an amazing amount of grip!! I was always surprised at how fast the folks could go on the ice - and the amount of ice shavings they kicked up!! Lots of fun!

Wow...thanks for the great response on these. Like I said, I was pretty happy with them. The DA 55-300 never lets me down. It was a definite learning experience though with shutter speed.

I'll post a few more, just because I feel like it.

I received good feedback from the guys I shot. Never met them before. The deal was, if you print one out, I want a copy the same size you made for yourself. I'm not sure what pose or crop they liked. As for the beer, well, I specified Corona which will be provided at the next race/practice I attend.

Here are a few more just for fun...
