Walking Iris and Pansies
Posted by sajmmiller, 03-18-2009, 09:09 AM sajmmiller is offline

I went out a couple of days ago with the intent of trying to improve my shallow depth-of-field, handheld, close-up compositions before going out to shoot wildflowers in the coming days. What do you think? Do you have any suggestions for improvement, other than using a tripod, which isn't always possible? Thanks.

For hand held well done - a monopod can often be a reasonable substitute if you have one.

Thanks for your kind comment! I will definitely take my tripod...hopefully heading to the Buffalo River area tomorrow in search of wildflowers. From past experience, using the tripod is not always an option, so I thought I'd work on improving my success rate without it. I appreciate very much the comment you left in my Zenfolio gallery...great motivation to keep shooting!

Try squatting down and resting your elbow on top of your knee.
Although, these look pretty good for hand held.

Nice shots. At this time of year in S. Ontario the snow has only just melted. Stuff like this gives us hope.

These are great shots! I don't see a lot to fault you on.
What lens are you using?

Thank goodness for SR. I know personally I shake like a nervous teenager at his first high school dance when I get in this close.

You've done well!

Thanks Dave. I'd like to try a lightweight, quality monopod with a small ball head. It would have to collapse down to a very short length. Something to think about...

That's good advice Ray. I was able to sit cross-legged and rest my elbows on my knees for some of the pansy shots, and that worked well. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks Tom. Glad you liked them. I think your Canadian winters would be too long for me, although, about three months from now when I'm swimming in heat and humidity, I will be wishing for winter again.
