Hi Wasupdoc, you have captured us well.
You probably walked past my front door, (at least you were several hundred metres from it when you took your first two shots).....if you are this way again, please drop in.
Cheers
Grant
G'day Grant. This was my first trip to the Gold Coast, absolutely loved it! I envy you living there in Burleigh. My wife is Aussie, and we do visit her dad in Queensland fairly often - will be there again in October. Would love to get together with some Pentaxians.
Mike
Mike, it's interesting to see visitors find attractive. Locals can become a bit blasé to the natural attractions. Where in Queensland does your father-in-law live? How does your wife find the climate in Idaho after QLD? Which part of Australia was she raised in?
The SE QLD region has the highest population growth rate in the country. Brisbane is expected to overtake Melbourne as the 2nd biggest Australian city by 2050. A lot of people come to SE QLD to retire, particularly from NSW & VIC. When they sell just an average home in Sydney or Melbourne, they usually have enough money to buy a nice place on the Gold Coast. I think the climate is a big attraction too. I suppose it's a bit like retiring to Florida in the US.
Please post when you about to visit again & we'll see what can be arranged.
Dan - thanks for the info on Queensland. It certainly does seem to be a busy and growning place, and yet at the same time it has a relaxed feel that is hard to find in the US. It is probably quite similar to Florida in terms of climate, definitely a contrast going from northern hemisphere winter to the subtropics. My father-in-law lives in the little town of Blackbutt (at first I thought that was some kind of reference to Aborigines - only recently learned it was a kind of gum tree He is getting along in years, so we hope to start visiting much more frequently than in the past.
Your father-in-law looks like a tough old coot. WWII Vet? They make 'em tough out Kilcoy/Blackbutt way. From Rolf Harris' song "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" (1963):
Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred
Tan me hide when I'm dead
So we tanned his hide when he died, Clyde
And that's it hanging on the shed
One of my favourite parts of Australia is the Gold Coast Hinterland. We used to go to the Gold Coast every year whe I was a child, between 35 and 45 years ago!
The Antarctic Beech forest, Purlingbrook Falls, Springbrook, Mt Warning, Natural Arch (not natural bridge as they now call it) etc. These were all great places to visit and go bush walking with my family.
Thank you for reminding me of those lovely days. I need to get back up there and see it's beauty once more.
Beautiful set of images. I think Australia is probably one of those places I've love to see some day, don't know if I'll ever get there. At least I'll get to see a lot of those beautiful sights from the pictures posted here by the large number of Aussie members. I think my favorite of this thread are the night shot of the city and the first sunrise picture. But they are all wonderful.
