Memorial Day in the US

Today is Memorial Day in the US. This past Friday, I took a walk through the Galveston Cemetary looking for veterans of past wars. While not many of these people died during warfare, they should all be remembered for their sacrifices. All told, I found veterans of 6 different conflicts from three separate nations.

First is the War of 1812 (with England)


Next is the War for Texas Independence (from Mexico)


Next is the American Civil War. The first shot demonstrates the tragedy of the conflict (read the historical marker), and the second shot is of one of the first Medal of Honor winners in our country (the MoH was created by Congress during the Civil War).

World War I - Pvt Paisley died in France less than a month from the war's end.


World War II


My apologies for not recognizing more of our recent conflicts, but this was an old cemetary, and I didn't find any markers that explicitly recognized them. They are in my memories as well, especially the young men and women in harms way today so I can eat my BBQ in peace.

Russ, a great series for this day. Although my dad survived from Anzio to Dachau in the 180th INF (45th INF DIV), there were so many that didn't, and I remember - of course - folks of my generation lost in Viet Nam. Although I set up the flag in the front yard this morning, I really didn't give the sacrifices these folks made the kind of solemn reflection I should have until I saw your photos. Thanks.
