Trying out infrared (B&W) in my panoramas...

Okay, this isn't *true* IR photography in the sense of removing the low-pass filter and all that (hence black and white), but I am having fun with the IR filter. The link below opens a Flash 9 interactive panorama (VR):

http://www.mab3d.com/QTVR/irpano1.html

(If it spins too fast on your screen, just click and drag in the window to pan it at your own pace.)

So I know a bit about photography (and I'm great with HDR and panoramic stitching), but I really haven't a clue what makes a "nice" IR image, or even a balanced Black & White. However, I've always liked IR photographs because they remind me just what "light" really is, and while I understand the concepts of gradations and zones and tonal distribution, I don't know how that plays out with IR. Any comments, hints, tips, or wisdom you can share would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, this was shot on a darn near perfectly clear day in the only daylight hour my family would let me out with my gear. Next time I'll hold out for more clouds...

Wow. VR is new to me...

I think this is very interesting. Am also interested in IR. Have a K100DS as a second to the K20D and will convert that at some point...

The imagine at the cross roads is particularly stunning...

How long exposures? Thinking to get a filter just to play...

Combine with AEB?

Look forward to more of your experiments.

Very nice. I've been pondering doing an IR pano, but haven't gotten around to getting a filter for one of my super wide lenses. What did you use? I could either get a 77mm filter for my 12-24, or a 72mm filter for my Sigma 8mm fisheye to mount on a 5D.... The compromise would be to get the 77mm and use a 72-77 step up adapter for the Sigma, but I'll be introducing more vignetting from the added filter rings (on top of the circular crop I get from the Sigma's filter cap). The advantage of the 77 is that I can also mount it on my OM Zuiko 21/2 with a 58-77 adapter without any added vignetting, which will increase the repertoire of potential lenses for IR panos. Decisions decisions :-)

This was shot with the DA 10-17mm on a Nodal Ninja panohead, and stitched with Autodesk Stitcher. I think the exposure time was 1/15, but I'd have to check (there is a bit of blur and ghosting in the leaves and some branches, but the wind was very minimal). It was tricky enough to get the exposure right, and then I didn't bracket at all. Probably a good idea for later experiments...

That is just the coolest thing I have seen in a while - well done.
