Yak Attack

Went to see the USAF Thunderbirds at Dover AFB, DE a couple of weekends ago , but they cancelled the show on Sunday when the weather would not cooperate. Low dark clouds and off and on rain. Made for very difficult shooting conditions of flying plane...well for me at least....
All was not lost.... saw some mighty fine fighters from WWII fly.
While walking back to the bus to go home a Russian Yak 9, a P-47, and P-51 started buzzing the field. I was just mesmerized by this wonderful sight and sounds of these mighty planes. I never thought I would ever see these planes in person fly in my lifetime....very impressive....That Yak 9....man was he low.....

Nice shot - I didn't even know there were any Yaks left in flying condition...

There's something about the sound of a Pratt&Whitney radial or a Rolls-Royce Merlin at full throttle that just reaches down into your soul and shakes loose a sense of "Damn I want to be the guy up there!"

Merlin's made a mighty fine powerplant for the unlimited hydroplanes too. A pity they all use jet turbine engines nowadays I loved the sound of screaming boats washing over Lake Washington in Seattle's Seafair races... Just not the same anymore.
