Bears in the North
Posted by PePe, 07-12-2009, 02:11 PM PePe is offline

Earlier this week I spent a couple of nights in north-eastern Finland not that far away from the Arctic Circle. It is a good time for spotting bears as that far up it doesn´t really get dark at all. This trip was also the first serious field trials for my Sigma 500/4,5.
The weather turned out to be a bit overcast, which assured the wide-open capabilities of the Sigma got thoroughly tested. To put it short: the more I use this lens, the more I like it!
Here are a couple of encounters from this latest trip.

Those are some great shots PePe, looks like that lens is working out well for you.

Two different grizzlies in two days, not bad. Thanks for posting them.

Good job! You have captured those kings of the forest well! I just hope I can do similar shots some day..

Very interesting to see bears in such a natural environment. I'm just wondering if these creatures were aware of your presence, were you alone or in a group?

you look at bears and think they're beautiful, but I'd be deathly afraid to get near one.

Good thing you had that 500mm.

beautiful pictures

I was on my own in a booth, so the bears were not aware of me being there. I prefered to keep it that way and spent the whole night there, got a couple of hours of sleep and only came out in the morning once the bears were gone.
Initially the idea did sound a bit weird, but it worked out all right !
