This picture does tell me as much of a story as I think it would have with a different composition.

Am I understanding you correctly? I'm reading that no matter how the OP could have composed this shot, your interpretation would remain unchanged.

I use Lightzone.
As far as I remember, I have used a "filter" close to orange.
I guess the result resembles that of the Channel Mixer with a relatively low value for blue channel and a slightly high value for the red channel.
With a calibrated monitor, it is done relatively easily by watching the output.
