I did some football (Am) this Aug 23 afternoon. At around 1/60s and MF (with A*300mmF4)

EXIF says F9, 1/60th, ISO100

That explains the blur.

Next time try to bump the ISO to 800 and widen the aperture to F4 or F5.6. That will get your shutter speed high enough to to stop the action better than you did in the example posted above.

Or maybe the blur was the intended effect with the panning.
Not a bad capture, really.
Got the subject in reasonably sharp focus.

Ash, you may be onto something. I just realized that Daniel posted this. He obviously knows how to handle his equipment, so perhaps that was the intended effect. I almost mentioned that the helmet was in pretty good focus in my original reply.

BTW, I hate the fact that you don't see the OPs avatar in this forum.

I think I see a booger hanging from his nostril.

I like it Daniel.

That is the front shot. Because it was against light (blown highlight) I could only get motion blur instead panning motion. The subject suddenly turned towards me instead and I could not pan at all.

I have to say a lot of hit and miss. But fun

Daniel

I love the sense of motion the 1st image conveys.

The 2nd image could be a very interesting subject for some PP work. The look of concentration on the lad's face is great.

Now he's trying to get the booger with his tongue.

My suggestion is to keep it at F8 or F10 and just bump up the ISO and shutter speeds to make sure you don't run into focus issues ... play around with it.
