Osprey shots
Posted by scott-devon, 09-02-2009, 03:13 PM scott-devon is offline

A few shots of an osprey in flight.. I'm still not real happy with my results. These are handheld and shot at 500mm, maybe next time I'll take my tripod and see if I can track them using it.

What seems to be lacking is sharpness, and contrast (mainly due to shooting close to/into the sun). #3's close to a good result - well lit and contrasty, but still suffers softness.

Check your settings and ensure Tv is fast (1/500 or faster).

Thanks Ash, I did just grab these using AV mode between trout while out fishing . Definitely a faster speed and more care will improve them. I plan to return there just to take photos, there are miles of trails to hike and several small lakes.

Scott step one accomplished - you have them perfectly framed. Were you using AF.C ? Was SR on or off ? I am in somewhat the same boat - very few BIF pics I have been happy with.

Thanks Dave, I was using manual focus and darned if I remember whether I had SR on... Ooops!

It seemed every time I got focused on a shot a trout would inhale my fly resulting in me snapping the shot, dropping the camera into my lap and grabbing my fly rod before it took off....

Not the best formula for shooting birds but it was fun combining the two hobbies.
