Zambia, 3 weeks (many pictures)
Posted by bymy141, 09-20-2009, 07:58 AM bymy141 is online now

We have just returned from a 3 week tour through Zambia.
Most of the time we have done walking safaris, which gives you a very different experience than sitting in a (save) car.
It has been a very intense experience.

I hope you enjoy the some of the pictures we have made.

Zambia is a beautifull country, in several areas you will not find any other tourists and there is an ambudance of wildlive. Since wildlive is not as used to humans as in Tanzania or Kenia, you'll need to work harder to find it and to approach it.

In these 3 weeks we have visited the:
- Kafue NP (Mukambi area and the Busanka Plains bush camp),
- South Luangwa (Kafunta and Kafunta Island Bush cam),
- North Luangwa (Kutandala bush camp),
- Livingstone.

We made +2100 photo's and almost 6 hours of HD video.
My standard setup was:
- K-7 & DA* 60-250mm combination, during daylight often complemented with a Kenko 1.5x TC.
- K10D & DA* 16-50mm.

Let's start with a few cats from the Kafue NP:

Leopard at night:

Lion at night:

Chetaahs:

Male lion (there were 4 males lying next to the road):

A cerval:

I'll put more pictures in responses to this thread.

Nice shots. I would love to have the K7 and Da* 60-250 combo.

Here is another NSFW shot on my last safari in Wyoming

Sun sets, sun downs

I wonder what kind of humor these photos will trigger....
By the way, I'd rather have a Pentax DA* implementation of Tokina's 80-400mm, instead of a DA* 60-250 and an 1.5x TC.

A few sun rises:

And some sun downs:

A few sun sets:

>> My favorite for the 3D effect : I'd like to wake up with such sight

>> I like the reflection on this one, may be with upper square crop ?

And some sun downs:

>> Beautiful too. I should crop and keep the left square but I'm too much obsessed with my old Yashica these days

>> Good night

Oops, I guess I was wrong in the text, the first 3 pictures were taken just before / after sun rise.
Actually the first was taken at the Busanga Plains, you can see the Lechwe antillopes in the mist. Although tropical it is cold there in the morning (frost on the grass), because of the average hight of the plains.
I've got a whole series of photos of that morning, it was very hard to decide which one to post here, they are all magical.

The light in Africa in the morning and late afternoon is so different, so good from Europe. I've taken most of my best pictures between 5:30 - 7:30 am and 17:30 - 18:15 pm.

No, all pictures are as is, no crops.

- Bert

PS I've added 2 more pics to that reply.

Remarkable safari pics Bert.
You have many classic captures from these - all shot to perfection.
The wild cats at night are quite a treat.
How were these guys lit for the photos?
Sunrise/sunset ones are all lovely.
Well done with them all and thanks for sharing.
