Filling in the time........
Posted by MoiVous, 10-04-2009, 09:18 AM MoiVous is offline

I had a few hours to kill in the city after dropping my daughter off at a music gig, so decided to try a few night shots with my Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DF.

(Please click on the images to enlarge)

The first port of call was the cities Anglican cathedral - like many churches its well lit up at night.....

and the bell tower looking up..

and from behind - not the usual view!

I did a comparison to my Sigma 10-20mm f4 which came along for the ride....still love this lens!

The cross of rememberance across the road was also lit up - and had the moon in the background too - interesting star pattern from the diaphragm

And with the Sigma 10-20mm BTW for comparison.....

I was quite pleased with the results from the Sigma 28-70!

I also took some shots across the water of the Festival Theatre and the fountain in Elder Park (my wife has christenned this the Salavdor Dali painting...its melting!)

the fountain with moon....(there was quite a crowd photographing this BTW )

and the theatre and fountain together...

All in all - a satisfying nights shooting!

Thanks for looking

Cheers

Looks like you had a good time.
#6 and 7 are my picks - nice colour and detail rendition with cool perspectives.
Well done Chris.

Thanks Ash - I like those as well. Probably the best of the series. And that Sigma 10-20 is a nice lens even with its smallish aperture.

Though number 5 has me fascinated with the 18 point star pattern in the highlights. I know its a 9 blade aperture, and they were long exposures, but does anyone have an explanation for it? Note that I did have a UV filter on the camera.

I enjoyed this night shoot so much I'm going to try more now the weather is improving (after that miserable nature shoot a 2 weeks earlier )

Cheers

Nice shots Chris. I'm glad I missed the wet meet up, did not look a good day.

Thanks Kev - I appreciate the feedback.

This series made me think we need to do some more night shoots as well. The weather was kind too (the last night shoot was a bit damp - does rain follow us around?)

Cheers

Nice way to fill in some time!

The 'Salvador Dali' would be my pick. Oh and the second one.

I should be in the same location on the 22nd with my photo club.

Thanks for looking and for the query Pete. It made me do some hunting to find out more about it. The monument is the Cross of Sacrifice (see:
But it must be a similar design - because the same style is in one of our cemeteries - viz Adelaide (Centennial Park) Cemetery, South Australia

Updated: I found some more info - its a standard Commonwealth Graves Commission design from after WW1. There is more about it at:
Do you have an image of the one in Saskatchewan? It would be interesting to see how many others there are in the world like it.

Thanks Matt. It was a great way to fill in time, and I'm tempted to do a lot more!

Glad you like number 2 - I tried to get a different perspective on the church spire, and was reasonably happy with it - though I think it needs a touch more PP to bring out the stone work detail.

Hope you have a good time with the photo club on the 22nd - I'll be enjoying London instead....

BTW, could you PM or send me details about the club - it sounded from what you said the other day like it could be fun.

Cheers

I read that odd numbered aperture blades generate double the number of star points.
