Engagement shoot - Sigma 30mm/FA77
Posted by ll_coffee_lP, 10-13-2009, 06:27 PM ll_coffee_lP is offline

This past weekend I shot an engagement shoot with my new Sigma 30mm and my trusty FA77 (with a sprinkling of Sigma 70mm thrown in for good measure). Thought I'd share with you folks for some feedback before the couple's gallery is shown to them. Let me know what you think...

I think the shots are great. I'm just not a fan of the muted color tint. I think it should either be full color or straight b&w, not in between.

Well done.
Well framed and spontaneously captured.
I also prefer more fuller colour, but in the end the client decides!

The last shot is my favourite -- great expressions all around.

Thanks for the feedback thus far folks!

Each shot shown above (and the 50 odd other's that I will have in their gallery) was storyboarded in advance. Before doing a shoot I meet with the client's to get a sense of what they are wanting from the pics and then draft up a series of stick figure drawings of poses that I want to do from their feedback. I don't end up using all the draft shots and certainly employ a lot of spontaneous shots on location as well, but it certainly helps to keep timelines intact and overall interest from the clients during the shoot.

I'm quite pleased with how this shoot turned out - mostly because of the client's wonderful smiles and natural expressions. They were really a treat to work with.

Personally I like the subdued colors. The subdued colors makes me focus more on the subject matter.

Sometimes less saturation & color can be a good thing. In this "digital world," perfect color balance and super saturation can be mundane.

cool shots you capture an essence quite well!
After getting the Sigma 30mm, I'm kinda looking at the 77mm Will keep an eye on your posts.

I agree. The pose/setup in the second image is very good but her smile when she looks at his book is priceless.

Great series overall, very well done!

I like the subdued colours, way better than colours screaming in your face. And pure B&W all the time is a bit too sad for an event like that.

When do you find yourself grabbing for the Sigma 70 rather than the Pentax 77?

Thanks for the additional comments!

I decided well in advance of the shoot to go for a less saturated and a warmer tone for the shoot. I'm actually not a huge fan of the oft-used over saturated hyper colour that is very typical in PP. I wanted to mimic a late afternoon shoot when it actually occurred at 10am.

Why did I grab the Sigma 70 over the 77....that's a bit of a funny story. I initially put it on to get some closer shots of the pairs hands and engagement ring. When I first got my K-7 I couldn't get the 77 to look right for me. After playing with the focus adjustment I was able to nail down a -5 for that specific lens and now it's spot on.

If I didn't have and trust the Sigma 30 I would have used the Sigma 70 much more (again because of trust in that lens). The majority of the shots were done at 30mm. After reviewing everything when I returned home I saw that the adjustment to my 77 worked perfectly and I'm again going to use it much more frequently.

On a side note - the couple has seen these images and are very happy with them. I can't wait for them to see the rest of the gallery (I saved a few WOW pics for only them to see).
