Trying to find my own "look"
Posted by newmikey, 10-19-2009, 03:17 PM newmikey is offline

Although I use a mix of tonemapping and other layers, combined with highpass filters, I am trying to avoid the "overdone" HDR look. Technically speaking, these are not HDR's either as they are all based on one single exposure, rather than many. Be interesting to read opinions, good OR bad! Is it something or is it utter bull? Please don't hold back.

from a technical standpoint I find these very well done, newmikey. Not sure I care for the first
one. I like the second one, interesting composition, the way you've done the tones reminds
me of an illustration in a book. Third one is OK to me but doesn't excite me.

I hope these thoughts are helpful to you in finding your style!

I like the subtle muted colors that you display here, I think I have looked at this set two or three times now trying to settle on which one I like best, I think I have landed on the third, Give me twenty minutes and another look and I might change my mind.

#2 is an excellent use of curves - well captured.
The textures are reasonably brought out in #1 but softened the detail in #3 - although this isn't necessarily a bad effect, quite well suited actually.
Well done.

1 - is completely awesome. I love everything about it, especially the texture of the grass. Super!
2 - is terrific in all regards. Building's aren't usually my thing, but this one's tops all around.
3 - doesn't work for me at all. Not sure if it's the subject matter, the crop, the softness of the piping in the foreground, the dark areas in the sky just above the lamp post, or the bleached out sky between the leaves of the tree on the left. This one doesn't seem nearly as polished as the first two.

I'm definitely digging your style though!
