Any one use pentax gears for professional work or to make a living here?
Seems like most professional photographers use either canon or nikon, I am wondering if there any professional photographer use Pentax gears for work?
I have used Pentax gear for making photos for scientific presentations and publications. A lot of these are macros and close-ups that would be beyond mundane to the average person. I currently have an Olympus microscope at work set to accept my K20d and k200d bodies as well as my labs Nikon body. I also have a Leica stereoscope setup at home to accept my Pentax bodies.
Edit: I have recently been doing some images for my "college" on an unofficial basis as well.
My wife and I have a side business shooting families, family events, babies, and maternity. We've been at it just over a year and are getting busier and really enjoying it.
We both have professional careers outside of photography, but if we got busy enough we might look at doing it full time.
No issues whatsoever using Pentax. Looking forward to the K7 to hopefully increase our level of keepers (moving kids = lots of shots slightly out of focus).
Hey there John,
I just had a quick glance at your site. The photos are so beautiful. It's the type of photos I want to take and also take it to a business type situation. How long have you been doing this and what was your business plan? I've been a Pentaxian for over 3 years now, but only tonight (Sydney time) have I just joined this forum. What do you suggest to get into business / side business? Your suggestions would be much appreciated.
I guess I never definitively stated this in my previous post: I use Pentax gear for professional work and instruction. It's definitely getting better as time goes by.
I've tried Canon, but what I tried didn't impress me (mid range gear - 40D).
Hi, my side business is aerial photography. I've been doing it for 3 years now.
I started with a Canon 350XT but as soon as the K20D came out I got it.
I have a K20D and I use a Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM. The quality of the K20D is amazing. My work is for printing and I have normally print 11x17, 20x30 and even 30x40 inches....and they look beautiful. The colors of the Pentax are incredible. I have seen aerial pictures with a D300 and they do not compare to the quality of the Pentax. Also once I had to tell a friend to do a job for me since I was out of the country, but the results weren't what I expected. He used a Canon with an L lens.
I shoot real estate on a part-time basis for cash. It pays for my Pentax equipment and accessories as well as 2 month long winter vacations in Florida plus some assorted side trips. I started with the K10D, then moved to the K20D and now the K7. I bought into the Pentax line as it is inexpensive and produces excellent results. Being semi retired my main interest is wildlife. But having a "hobby" that pays for itself is great.
While loads of money could be used on equipment, I've never purchased equipment without using money I've made from photography. Stock is a good majority of my photo income.
Oh, that reminds me. I recently did a shoot for the Utah Highway Patrol, and one of my photos will be used for the Patrol's statewide magazine, fall issue cover.
I've used Pentax gear since abt 1966. I've worked as a professional (both full and part time).
I currently do professional work in conjuction with our printing company here in TEXAS .... Pentax by Choice!
In fact, I have a gig in the works for October that will without a doubt be the biggest thing I've ever done. It'll probably be about a three to five thousand dollar project.
I've done a few weddings and events with my photos. Some paid, but mostly volunteer/free. Thankfully, as my experience has grown, I'm getting more and more positive reviews on my photos. And I've always used Pentax.
Pentax glass really does the job well. I wouldn't be able to afford the lenses I have now if I owned one of the big 2, since I love pro (or pro-ish) F2.8 lenses.
My last photoshoot (volunteer) got rave reviews. All this with a Pentax camera and a few good lenses.
I use Pentax gear to shoot weddings, and it has been great. The best part about shooting weddings professionally is that they pay for me to get all of the gear that I want! I use the k20 for now, but I know I will eventually give in and get the k7.
