AF-540FGZ flash DOA

Thanks for moving the thread. I was not sure where to put it.

...and thanks to all who replied

as it turned out, a quick scrape with a flat head screwdriver over the -ve contacts in the body proved to be enough to get it working. something I should have done first up, but when I discovered the fault I was packing my bag, preparing for a trip to NZ.

I'm pleased to report that the old girl is now all healed and working.

I'm less glad that I now don't have any justification to buy the godox V1 I have been eyeing off.

---------- Post added 26th Jan 2024 at 10:46 ----------

I have the godox light modifyer AK-R1 which I bought to use with their mini flashes MF-12 and an adapter which means I can use it with rectangular flash heads. If I did get a Godox flash I would opt for the round head V1 ('cause they arent making the V1pro for Pentax)

Thanks for contributing.

Hi All

I'm looking for clues

After not using my 540 flash (1st edition) for some time, I recently tried to fire it up, but it is a dead as a dodo.

Does anyone have any idea if this is common? Uncommon? anything I can do to fix it? Or do I just cut my losses and buy a Godox flash?

Thanks for a fantastic article. I'm Competition Steward of my local camera club. I think I might set a 'cheap kit lens' challenge for our group.

Clackers' Beginners Tip 87: Exposure Modes

Maybe we just keep the magic mode to ourselves??

Nah, just kidding, need to make it more well known.

It is possible to do the same thing in full manual mode without the greem button, which is what, I guess, the 'major brand shooters' do. Just use the aperture and shutter speed dials in conjuction with the meter display to get an exposure. The green button is just so much faster and more convenient.

I guess a new user needs to come to PF and ask lots of questions of the old hands
I scanned the K-1 Manual, it does not appear that this method is mentioned in there either. I think it is just something I worked out over time, from the K200, the K-7, K-5, K-3 and now K-1.

This is how I shoot my K-1 90% of the time.

Full manual mode, spot metering and lock the meter to the AF point. point the focus point to what I want to expose for, say a bright highlight, use the green button to set the exposure, hit the AE lock button, then refocus on the subject.

Love the green button. I tease my Canikony friends about it. 'oh... your greatly more expensive camera doesn't have this simple feature? How interesting....

Do you feel like donating one to me?? :D

I read all the glowing reports about the 3-3 and understand it is a wonderful camera, but I rarely shoot anything that moves fast, and I still have my K3-I as a 2nd body.

I just stopped lusting after camera's after I got the K-1.

This is a stunning pic. Simply beautiful.

Can I borrow a cupful of talent?

Wonderful capture. I had my K-5 converted by Kolari a couple of years ago.

I generally use the DA 35 as my IR lens. I must give the FA siblings a try. Thanks for posting.

I was recently in sydney and took part in an organised shoot to capture the sights during their 'vivid sydney festival'.

The instructors were youngish guys - 30 odd- who were sporting the latest and greates Sony Mirrorless cams and simmilar, as were most of the participants. One of the instructors noticed my Camera and said 'is that a Pentax? I've never seen one in person'.

We had a good natured banter, I told him the K-1 was the 'best camera ever made' - he waived his Sony 'beer can and pack of fag's' and claimed that body was.

I wouldn't want to be using his gear in a rain storm...

The old girl seems to still be able to handle herself...

I'm confused. First you said the lens works fine with other bodies then you said

One of these statements contradicts the other....

I have had the K-1 since it first hit the shelves here in Oz.

It cured my Camera Lust.

I need no other. I want no other.

If the lens works with other bodies, it is clearly not the lens. Do you have problems with other lenses on the K-1?

FTR my 24-70 works flawlessly on my K-1

I recently learned of and joined a local camera club. We are a small community, so the number of members is pretty small. (under 40 I think) The first guy I met was wielding a K-70. Naturally we were drawn together to discuss 'the good stuff'.

As a duty to the local community, the camera club was asked to photograph a family fun day event a couple of Saturdays ago. While there I met another fellow sporting a K-5 and DA16-50.

So there are at least 3 of us in my local area!

Highest Shutter Count K1?

My K-1 has a 'mere' 13,402 shutter operations. I rarely do burst shooting.
Bought from Kirks Camera's in Ringwood, Melbourne on 3 May 2016. I found the first snap I ever took with it, a rough portrait of Paul, the owner of the now defunct store.
It still works in exactly the same way it always has.

IR conversions

I had my K-5 done by Kolari. Full conversion cost me about $500 Aud. I guess about $350USD is roughly the conversion factor.
It is great to get use out of a body I would not otherwise use, or would just sell for a few sheckels.

I had trouble getting the camera and lens I sent with it back into Oz because someone put down a value of $1000 on the paperwork that came with the return, and that triggered an import tax event, so the AusGov wanted me to pay a few hunderd dollars of tax on stuff that was already mine. In the end Kolari solved the problem by actually paying the duty. It was a sensational piece of customer service. I could not recommend them more highly.
