I think it's good for basic operation. The pentax 540 looked a lot more user friendly and better built but is twice the price in the UK and I keep hearing bad things about it.

So I went out and bought the sigmna flash after much deliberation... it came down to price really and the fact tha tI dont' know how oftern I'll use it. Migh tget a pentax /Metz flash later.
Here's last nights shots, having read the manual for half hour. . . never used a flashgun in my life bear in mind! I mostly used it at normal and -0.5 power. Bounced at around 45 - 60 degrees (the gun doens't click to 45 degrees annoyingly so I'll have to make a velcro/tape solution for it or soemthing). I also used a Stofen omnibounce.
What do you think?

Thanks again for your help. It would be nice to use the manual lens with flash but for half the price I went for the Sigma. For gig's I mainly use the AF zoom anyway. I might get an AF 1.4 prime for gigs too to use instead of my manual one as at high ISO the benefits of my manual lens decrease I think.. conditions/noise etc.
Wonder if I can use my manual 50mm 1.7 with the sigma for still life/ protraits... I guess I can probably manually adjust the intensity range somehow on the Sigma no!?
If not I'll get the Pentax as a second unit later on.. or the new USB updatable Metz flashgun when it comes out if that has auto flash... see what the reviews are like for it. I see so many people having problems with their Pentax flashguns!

Does auto flash mean you can use manual lenses then?
I presumed that when I use my 50 1.7 M that I wouldn't be able to use a flashgun v easily.
But, if I can use the 540 easily with it, it might be worth a look. Although being mostly for concert's, might the Sigma super be more useful alongside my sigma 18-50 2.8? And keep my manual lens for low light non-flash shots ( I took some at a gig with it recently and they came out well).
Regarding the amount of swivel.. I'll have a look thi safternon as I'm off to look at one. I presume it'll swivel enough for concert/wedding purposes!?

thanks for all the info. I'm not particuarly sure what all that meant, so still not sure which of the two is strongest... although they're both prob on a par I guess?

Mechan if you like Kim's photos I'd suggest buying the same lens no? The Tamron 90mm macro.

I sometimes regret just not buying a couple of primes for my K10D. Before now I've had a couple of zooms for my film SLRs but always preferred/used my primes.. I guess it's a bit like why I shoot RAW over Jpeg... I want the best possible result!
I just thought that these days the zooms are better... they are... but I'd still recommend using a coupel of primes.. especially for a beginner.. it'll save you zooming in and out and messing around... see what you like, shot it. if not, find a better spot.. you'll find it's a better spot for a reason an dnot just a zoomed it version of your worse spot.

I have the 18-50 2.8 Macro. It's much better than the earlier non-macro version (I had that before - it left a yellow cast over everything, which I didn't like) the non-macro is a little closer to my 50mm prime output.
Pornflake don't sell your 35mm ... primes are really much better ... I still use my manual 24 and 50 when I have time, fo r photos that look unbelievably excellent. If you do want to sell it, can you sell it to me?I lost my autofocus 50mm prime and would love the 35 as a replacement! if only the 40mm pancake was 30mm and 1.8 or so (it came out top of a recent review of 50mm primes and would reduce the weight of my camera nicely - the 18-50 sigma is heavy!! Also shame that the Sigma 30 1.4 is so big and the HSM doesn't work on pentax.
beware tha tthe 18-50 or simliar renders your flash useless in most situations.

Thanks Crashman. It's good to hear from someone who has both. I think the guide numbers are based on different ermm 'things' so if you if you say that the sigma is more poerful I'm inclined to believe you. I'm not too fussed about the power... as long as it's in that sort of range.
Anyo other comparisons woudl be much appreciated... most people will say to me that you should get the proprietry units .. but for half the price , if nobody has anything bad to say about it other than build quality ... then... does it have exactly the same functionality / compatability????

Thanks for that. The Samsung version of the 540 is interesting. I'll look into availability. The sigma is £140 and the Pentax is £310 over here. So quite a bit more. If the Samsung one is the same as the Pentax and £140ish that might be good. I heard the Pentax has exposure problems which is worrying.
Hmmm tricky thing is it's hard to try then all as none of them are in stock anywhere of course. Any other ideas? I'll probably get an omnibounce with it. I was set to buy a Pentax 540 flash but.. does the Sigma 500 Super DG do everything that teh Pentax one does on the K10D? (not bothered about build quality or anything... just compatability / accuracy of exposure / functions/control/ power.. want to use it for gigs mainly and some occasional portrait/experimental work, possibly weddings/occasions as the onboard flash leaves a shadow). The Sigma is so much cheaper see... should I get it?

Surely? Thats's the reason it's got all the buttons and everythign is so accessible. I played with both fo ra couple of hours before buying and every time i said to myself (or the assistant) 'how do you do...' the answer was much simpler on the K10D. I had to have that camera... it ws so much more like using my old basic K1000! Oh and you can't use camera scene modes if you shoot RAW anyway.
It's a shame though as I like the smaller size and weight of the K100D... the K10D is proving to be quite a weight on my shoulders after a while... the K100D you wouldn't notice was in your bag. When I had a Nikon D50 I kept thinking someone had stolen it because it was so light in my bag!
Oh and the better high ISO would have def been a benefit.. and lack of those damn lines in soem of my low light shots! damn it! I would say buy the K10D and then the K100D as an altrnative if you can pick one up real cheap.

The colour effects are done in Lightroom. In 'quick develop' or whatever it's called. The blue 'cold something-or-other' only works in some shots and the sepia type effect called 'aged' or something also needs to be carefully applied. Plus you can lighten and play with contrast till you're happy with it.
The original lighting has to be right or you can end up with people who look like corpses.
As for crawling about on the floor... daytime champagne drinking makes it easy.
