Just updated ExifTool to the latest version.

Your GUI says that I am out of date with the updater.

Microsoft still does not like your installer.

I had to run through hoops to get it loaded, it also has refresh issues. When I switch from Norway to New Zealand the screen flickers and the whole thing blanks out several times.

Better than nothing - although I was using the old version only to update lens metadata.

Yup - checked all the boxes and the dll is loaded. I use OSM on GeoSetter and it works - it just works.

No maps on my system. Too bad.

I find it interesting that GeoSetter uses OSM and you do not have to jump through all the DLL hoops. If the DLL is required, why does OSM work in one application and not the other?

On my system the anti-virus has a hissy fit.
Once it is up and running, the Open System Map, does not work.
While the details panel will show GPS coordinates the map panel refuses to show anything other than Long 1.234 Lat 1.234 on PEF, DNG, or JPEG files that are geotagged from my K-3II.

I will continue to use GeoSetter Beta for Geotagging and ExifToolGui (the old version) for setting LensID.

Nice try, but having no maps available for a Geotagging application is not a win.

I live in the PNW. If you don't go out in the rain (that's why we have rainforests out here) you really don't take many photographs.

I have been rained on it Hungry, Scotland (the highlands and the Orkney's), England, WA state (Rainforests, Beach during a Typhoon), Canada and other locations.
I do take precautions and I am fully aware of what I am doing as I have been shooting in various weather conditions for over 60 years using, for the most part, unsealed film cameras.

Hardly, I own three Fujica 35mm film cameras (the for runner of Fuji cameras) and they are not worth squat on the market. If I would try and sell them, I would be lucky to get $50 for all three bodies along with the lenses.

True comment, cameras are not an investment. It is rare that a camera will increase in price over time.

Now as for the mem about Pentax is Doomed - The Chris, Jorden and friends over at Peta-Pixel are split with one of their group stating that Ricoh will just "pull the plug" on Pentax. Typical Chris and Jorden like dislike for Pentax, probably a carryover from their work on DPR who still disses Pentax, i.e. no real coverage of the K-3III and nothing on the monochrome. Someone from Pentax must have spit in the DPR coffee a long time ago.

PetaPixel's Bold Camera Predictions for 2024 | PetaPixel 52 minutes in.

Pretty sad how these guys perpetuate the meme and faun all over Olympus - now that that company is gone.

The Leatherman Micra is still being sold on Amazon and the Leatherman site.

My first Leatherman Micra was surrendered to the TSA in AK (forgot to put it into checked luggage). I bought a small Gerber multitool that I had to surrender to security at T-Mobile field. At that time security almost did not let me take my camera in with my 16-50mm. The only reason I got in was because I had the lens hood stowed so it was not "too long" and "professional". That was the last time I will every carry a camera to a baseball game. My current Leatherman Micra stays home when I travel as I do not use checked luggage any longer - too much of a hassle.

What speed SD card?

Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 will format SD cards using FAT12/FAT16, FAT32, exFAT. The following list shows the default for each SD type.
SD cards 0-2GB => FAT12/FAT/16
SDHC cards 2-32GB => FAT32
SDXC cards 32-2TB => exFAT
SDUC cards 2TB-128TB => exFAT

The notion that Windows 10-11 can not format SD cards beyond 32GB is patently false.

If you want to erase any data off of a SD card, reformat it in the camera. There is the option of using the Sd memory card formatter from the SD Association. It is a free download. There are also disk erase utilities that will write zeros over the card contents.*

So, it goes.

The women is Imogen Cunningham. One of the most renown female photographers in US history. (April 12, 1883 – June 23, 1976)

Imogen Cunningham - Wikipedia

Born in Portland OR, educated at the University of Washington, learned the ropes with Edward Curtis documenting his work on "The North American Indian" where she learned Platinum Printing. Moved to California where she met Edward Weston and Willard Van Dyke. She became one of the members of the f/64 group. She was a close friend and colleague of Ansal Adams.

I am surprised that people in the PNW do not know about her. There was a photo exhibition at SAM (Seattle Art Museum) a few years ago. She is a honored PNW photographer. Heck even Microsoft has a set of her original flower pictures hanging around their campus in Redmond.

I am just plain disappointed that photographers here resort to mocking a women based on her expression. Very sad indeed.

(I will most likely be band for this)

Memory Card Full - it is not full

Check the forum for SD formatting, and read the camera manual.

Always format your SD cards in camera as that function is built into how the camera works. The body manufacturer also says to format SD cards in camera.

Non-camera OS's will write information to the SD card and those files take up space that the camera can not use but it will detect that the SD card has less space than normal.

I always power off the camera, remove the SD card, lock the SD camera and use a card reader to transfer files. (Note: don't move them, copy them explicitly)
Once you have verified that the files are copied correctly, unlock the card and re-insert it into the camera. If the card is full, keep it locked and insert a new blank card into the camera - check the newly inserted card to confirm the camera body detects it. Then format the card in the camera.

On this years vacation I had 5 32GB cards with me. Before we got on the plane (day before while packing up the camera) I formatted both cards in camera ensuring they were blank and unlocked. I unlocked all of the cards. When I take the cards out, I lock them. Each day, I use my SD card reader built into my PC to COPY the days shots to an external SSD. Remove the card, unlock it and return it to the camera. I then copy the images from the external SSD to a 1TB internal secondary drive in my PC. I then eject the SSD - backup.

If a card becomes full, I follow the same process, except that I keep the SD card locked and load a new SD card into slot 2 after migrating the card in slot2 to slot1. A simple rotation of cards.

Note: All cards are in the unlocked position at the start of the trip. If I happen to be digging around in my bag and I find a locked card - it was in use and goes back into the bag. I then dig around for a unlocked card to put in the camera. (I also move all locked cards, stored in their plastic card holders, to another bag. i.e. not my camera bag)
So, I have the images still on the SD card.
I have the images on my SSD unmodified.
I have the images on my laptop - modified as necessary and used by my editing software.

To reiterate, never put a unlocked card into your SD reader. If you delete images using your PC, the PC OS will write garbage to the SD card. The same thing occurs if you format your SD card in your PC, the OS will write garbage to the SD card that the camera.
Always format your SD cards in camera per the user manual.

Oh - and I have screwed up more than once. Recovering several days of images is a pain in the caboose. In one instance it took me well over two weeks after getting home from a two-month trip to find that I messed up. Everything was recovered and I had a long talk with myself about being a ID10T.

Your thoughts, I believe they didn't put forward all the advantages of using Pentax

The Phoblographer is a Leica bigot. A few years back he was talking about a film camera for beginners. He recommended a used Leica over anything else. I called him out on that because of the price and he got all whiney about starting out with "good" gear. As if beginners have all the money in the world. (He stated that used bodies are cheap (1-3K) but go out and buy a new lens (2-4K) for a beginner)

People forget the Phase One Achromatic backs. They are monochrome and cost multiples of a new Leica. Depending on what Phase One camera body you put them on, they can be DSLR or Mirrorless.

(Phase One IQ3 100MP Achromatic ($54,990 with XF body and lens)
(Leica Monochrom $9,195 - body only)
(Pentax K-3 Monochrome $2,199.95 - body only)

Just because that system (Phase One) starts out a 50+K USD is no reason to not include them.

---------- Post added 09-06-23 at 01:21 PM ----------

That could be him. But about the time that Pentax said they will stay with "the mirror" the Phoblographer said they would no longer report on Pentax cameras (due to Pentax users calling the site out on Bolshoi about the camera's functions etc.) and Pentax's lack of following the mirrorless way, he disappeared from the site.

He posted here - rarely as I recall - but at that time he was using his "tank" K-1.

Nothing new here.
The Phoblographer has explicitly stated that they will not even report or review Pentax cameras. Their reason is that since Pentax has not gone mirrorless the site will not say anything about Pentax. This site does follow and report about Ricoh GR series - because it is mirrorless.
They do have interviews by various photographers who do use DSLR's, but they only report/review mirrorless cameras these days. Although some Canon DSLR's are covered.

Pentax owners used to call the site owner out on some of the Bolshoi he passed off as "ethical reporting" on Pentax. He is one of the many site owners who think that Pentax users are the most whinny of all camera owners. I just don't like people who get their kicks out of picking on users who point out where the owner is flat out wrong.

One of their past employees was a K-1 user and he had a few articles on its use. He no longer works there - most likely because he used a Pentax DSLR. He used to be a member here but I don't remember his moniker.

Pentax is dead to them, and Pentax is dead to Camera Jabber too. No great loss.

Where is "Focus Assist" feature on K-1? Pairing with vintage screw-mount Takumar lens

Check out the discussions on the subject of back button focusing and its advantages. The use of back button focus techniques continues to work even with AF lenses.

I use back button focus exclusively. If you use shutter button half depressed, the camera will be focusing every time you depress the shutter. When using back button focus, you set the focus while pressing the AF button. Once focus is achieved, release the AF button and the focus point is set, follow pictures are shot without the delay of focusing over and over and over.

Using the example of the "other" photographer - with the beep - on my last time of shooting a performance:
We were in the balcony for a piano concert with multiple participants.

The distance did not change, he was using a AF lens and focus using the shutter button.
Every time he took a shot, the camera would focus - beep - shoot - focus - beep - shoot - focus - beep - shoot. For the each shot the same thing happened, even though the subject did not move enough to require the camera to re-focus. And we all know about focus "hunting" - it happens all the time.

I was using a manual lens - I focused, shot an image, then shot additional images. If I were using my AF lenses (which I have in the past) the process is the same. Frame - focus - shoot - shoot - shoot. As opposed to Frame - focus - shoot - focus - shoot - focus shoot.

The use of back button focus allows (or forces) me to make the decision as to the focus point and the object in focus not the camera. The camera does not know if I want the (say for a rock band) the drummer in the back of the stage or the lead guitar player in front in focus. I pick what is in focus, when I want to focus - the camera is there to make the exposure. I prefer to be in control - rather than the camera.

Your milage will vary.

Use back button focus.
Put the body into Manual focus mode, hold down the AF button and twist the focus ring until the green polygon lights up.
I have been doing this since 2005 on my *isdS, K10D, K20D, and K-3II. using the same old 300mm Vivitar f5.6 TX mount lens with a Pentax adapter.
Not a problem - Oh and get rid of the beep and instant review. Nothing is worse than being at a performance and becoming the center of attention with the Gawd Dern beeping camera that lights up like a flashlight in the dark room. (said from experience shooting in theaters and musical performances - I fact at the last one I shot, early July, the organizers came over and stopped the guy with the Canon 5D because it was causing the performers to lose concentrations)

Where to print photos for accurate color reproduction

Costco has shut down their photo processing service. They will stop taking orders as of the January 27th 2023.
In the distant past, three years ago, they had been providing icc profiles for their in-store printer. However, once they removed the instore printers, the ability to provide the appropriate icc printer profiles came to a stop also.

So, in order to get better colors, you should, I would say must:
  • Calibrate your monitor - normally done before post processing. Do not trust your Mark-I eyeball/brain, they will lie to you.

  • For the current photo services (Shutterfly - Costco transferred to Shutterfly, Walmart, etc.) export in sRGB as most of these services do not understand anything but sRGB.

  • If you do want to use a high-end print service, I suggest WhiteWall, a German based printer. I have used them, and they are excellent - but they are high end and not necessarily inexpensive. They have multiple papers, printers and print styles. They also provide custom icc printer profiles at no additional cost.

Or, you could bite the bullet and purchase a decent printer and print your own. I have an Epson XP-15000. I also have a X-Rite (now sold to another company) ColorMunki Photo that produces icc profiles for monitors and printers. I have profiled my monitor and all of the papers I use. It takes a little work, but it does make for some nice pictures on my wall.

Vivitar made "adaptable" lenses too, see the TX series adapters. I have a 300mm f3.5 that has a Fujica M42 adapter and a Pentax K adapter.
I have carried that lens down to NZ (Pentax K) and I use it all for shooting images of piano performances (Pentax K) on a yearly basis. Before Pentax, I carried it all over Yellowstone and other places in Wyoming on vacation/photo outings. Still works, I can change the adapter in about 5 seconds. (Yes I still have my working Fujica ST-801, ST-901 and AZ-1 cameras)

However, I ran the install process while using my "normal" account and it worked. Go Figure.

I am still not happy with Serif's "we are busy" garbage. Their support staff really needs help.

I was able to purchase V2 yesterday when using a different card. (Knee jerk reaction - do not use a debit card as the payment system used by Serif does not understand debit cards)

I never did hear back from Serif about my earlier attempts (all of which have case numbers). I did receive several ads from Adobe pushing their photographer's subscription - but only after I had complained on the Affinity Photo user forums. (Adobe monitoring Serif for issues?)

I have not installed the newer version, but I have the download and key. I also watched the pre-announcement videos and noticed the UI changes.

If you check the Affinity Photo User Forum, you will see multiple threads about issues with payment/license issues. Very little response from Serif other than "we are busy" and one link that lays blame for not accepting payments on the individuals bank systems or not using the latest browser version.

Pretty lame experience all in all. I will wait to install it.

By the way - on Windows the download mechanism (defaulting to using MS loader msix) will by default load to your C: drive. Microsoft thinks everyone is using a laptop with a single drive. Lame, lame, lame.

Please re-read my earlier post. #7

I did contact my bank. They said that the issue is on Serif and their handling of credit cards. My Bank put the purchase on my account and was waiting for Serif's payment system to accept the transaction.

There is a thread on Serif's Affinity Photo forums that tracks this issue. I am not the only one who has this issue. The only response from Serif is the auto response bot saying "we are busy".

Since the transaction(s) have been idle for more than a week, my bank has removed them from the account.

Serif has extended the low entry price for Affinity Photo until the 14th. I might wait until the 13th to see if their payment process is working.

I received an email from Serif stating that they have extended the low update period. I decided to check their user forum and lo-and-behold I am not the only one.
Evidently there is up to a 10-day delay in Serif accepting credit card payments - on some cards. Go figure, I have not heard anything from them on my three attempts to buy the software.

To add to the issue, I received an ad from Adobe today advertising their photography plan with the catch line:

Upgrade to the latest version in hours - not days or weeks.

I wonder if Adobe has been following the "Adobe Alternative" having issues with update payments. Adobe is faster - at least faster than 10 days.

I tried to upgrade but for some reason Affinity will not accept my credit card. It is the same card I used to upgrade to CO v23 last month and the same card I used to purchase Affinity Photo in the first place.

I get an instant response from Affinity stating that the transaction is declined. I talked to the bank and they say the transaction is in "pending" mode waiting for Affinity to do well ----- something.

I have sent of three emails to Affinity including their accounts address. Same answer each time - automatic near instantaneous response:
"As a result of the V2 Launch, we are receiving an exceptional amount of emails and tickets. There will be an extended delay in responding to you. Please see the following link for an FAQ specific to Affinity 2.0; these questions should hopefully answer your questions."

I hate getting bot answers and no additional response. It has been almost two weeks. I will wait until I hear from them - if I don't, I will not upgrade.
In the past (last year and several places here) I have suggested that "for my needs" Affinity is a good supplement to CO for those things that CO does not do. (Putting Text in an image, a different more adaptable set of stitching tools and photo stacking).

Now, if they don't want my money, maybe they should just come out and say that some credit cards/banks are not accepted.

I stated the above out on DPR and got a snarky comment from the Affinity Photo talking head. Nothing more.
