Editing PEF RAW files on a Mac

Thanks enoxatnep. I think I have been expecting too much from the bundled software. Lightroom seems to be doing the trick. It's a little different but like you say very powerful. How do you convert from PEF to DNG?

By the way what is the purpose of Silkypix Developer Studio if its not a program for editing Pentax RAW files? Does it have some other purpose?

It works in that I can open JPEGS and do some basic editing but I would like to be able to take a RAW file and make adjustments throughout the range of those possible. e.g. White Balance, Colour Mode, Levels, Dynamic Range, Shadows and Highlights etc. Adobe Lightroom was suggested and it seems to be the best option so far. I had hoped that the Pentax software provided would be able to do the most with Pentax RAW files. Anyway, I'll keep looking for the best software to fully manipulate PEF files.
Thanks

I've tried both RAW formats and neither appear to be really editable in the software that came with my K5. I have been used to Nikon RAW and those files are truly RAW in that when loaded into the NX2 software that comes with Nikon cameras. You can adjust and change all parameters of the file. White Balance, Colour Mode etc.
I'll keep trying and thanks for your response. It may well be that the software prefers a pc to a Mac.
How much are you able to manipulate RAW files using the Pentax software?

I'm new to Pentax and now have a K5. I would like to shoot in Pentax RAW but when I attempt to open PEF RAW files in either Silkypix Developer Studio or Pentax Camera Utility 4. the file will not open, greyed out and not even recognized. Is it because I have the Mac versions do you think? Hope one of you RAW shooters can help me out. Cheers - Ken

A friend of mine who is also a keen photographer and knows his cameras once described Pentax cameras a very good but a bit "quirky." I think he was right. After using Nikons for many years I am finding my K5 to certainly be a bit quirky.

Very good point pxpaulx. I have been meaning to get back to more manual control over my photography. I think what thrum me was the error message and not knowing what it meant. Now that I know a setting needs to be changed in the camera I am fine. Thanks.

Thanks Adam. I figured out that the one I have is fully manual and I have to set my camera for Manual aperture ring in Custom Settings as well. It's doable but not the best. Fortunately the PK lens I have only cost $15 - no great loss.

Recently I bought a K5 believing that all Pentax lenses would be compatible. I have an old lens with a PK mount and it goes onto the K5 just fine but I get an error message - a flashing F in the LCD/Monitor. and the shutter won't release. What's up with this? Anyone know?:(

Hi careboy. I shot a number of RAW images in the Pentax RAW format and attempted to open them in the Silky Pix Developer software that came with the camera but not possible. The program doesn't recognize the files. They are all greyed out. Using the Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4 I was able to open the files but the Filter Effects were nowhere to be found. Maybe it's because I have a Mac and the software is built for PC's/ Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone. This is a great help. With respect to the kit lens, I find its overall performance mediocre. The quality just isn't there - good value for money but I need something faster, quieter and sharper overall, both in and out. The Tamron looks like a good choice but I may hold off and get the DA* 16-50 2.8

I love my new K5 but I'm not totally happy with the kit lens. Having been at this for many years now I know that without a good lens it doesn't really matter how good the camera is.
What I need to know, even if it costs me plenty, what are the best lenses for my K5?
I'm looking for the best zooms available. Any suggestions? I want sharp, quiet reasonably contrasty glass. As with most of us I am looking for the WOW factor is my images.
Looking forward to hearing from those of you out there who have lenses they are really happy with.
Thanks - Ken

I have enjoyed and appreciated excellent answers to questions I have posted on this forum and am now hoping for more of the same. This time it's about the Custom Filters feature on my new K5. Does anyone have a reference I can use to learn how to set the variables in this feature? For example I would love to be able to create a Lo Pass filter for shooting items for sale on ebay. Once again I find the Owner's Manual totally inadequate when trying to learn more about this. I can't believe that Pentax would not provide a much more comprehensive manual for their professional level K5. Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks - Ken

I wish he would do one on the K5. How similar are the inner workings of the K200 to the K5 do you think?

Setting a fixed ISO

Hi ANZAC. I'm a former Kiwi and enjoying this forum. I am finding it very helpful. I now beginning to understand how the K5 firmware works. I have always been a Nikon user and still really like my D7000 but this K5 came my way and so far it has been a fun camera to use. The Program lines then simply provide a bias for the combination of Shutter and Aperture. You still have to manage things like colour control. - landscape, portrait etc. Tell me more about this Green Button. You say that pushing it in P mode will tell you the optimum f stop for the lens on the camera? Have I got that right? What else does it do? Appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks wizofoz down in Oz.

There's another feature of the K5 that I don't fully understand and that's "Program Lines" I get the Depth of Field provision needed for good portraits and landscapes but I have always controlled that through f stops. What else does a Program Line do? Once again the information in the manual is very basic. I would like to know what else is set when selecting a particular Program Line. Can anyone help clarify this for me? Thanks in advance.

Thanks aleonx3. That clears it up perfectly. Knowing that I can set a fixed ISO simply using the ISO button and edial is what I needed to know and then to go back to AUTO ISO by simultaneously holding down the Green and the ISO buttons works great. The K5 owner's manual is very basic and doesn't explain any of these finer points. For a flagship model with professional features, you would think Pentax would provide a manual with some depth to it. Soon after joining this site I asked about any good books on the K5 and found one eBook which has been helpful but it too is very basic. Not sure if it's just me but I like to know exactly what happens in the camera when I make a particular setting or choice in the menu. Anyway, you guys have been great. This Forum has been so helpful and I have to add how much I appreciate the rapid responses I have had to questions. Other forums are way slower and therefore less helpful. This one is great. Thanks again.

Just to make sure I have this clear in my mind. In order to activate AUTO ISO you must set a range in Menu. As soon as you adjust it using the rear e dial it moves out of AUTO until such time as you activate it again in the Menu item. Do I have this correct? Thanks by the way. This is appreciated. I like and need to be able to control my ISO - most of the time I like to set my camera settings manually then I don't get unexpected surprises.

I want to be able to set the ISO for say 400 and know that this won't change as conditions in lighting change. Is this possible? It surely is. Maybe it does but why set a range from low to high if it isn't needed? Maybe it only kicks in when in Auto Rec. Mode (Green Mode) and other Auto Modes.

Probably a dumb question but I can't find anywhere to set a fixed ISO on my K5. I can set it using the ISO button and e-dial but it appears that there is no way to shut off the Auto ISO as listed in the Menu settings. There is a place to set the range but no On/Off for AUTO ISO that I can see. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a menu item for this. Thanks

Does this unit work on a K5? Is it dedicated for use by the K line of cameras?
