I'm looking for a well loved but functional DSLR. It can be ugly cosmetically as long as it functions, no box, cables or anything else required.
I plan on removing the internal filter and trying my luck at Infrared Photography,
I don't want to spend much since it's more of a curiosity than anything else.
$100-$150 depending on the model
Let me know if you have a used DSLR that you wouldn't mind me putting under the knife.
Thanks -Dave-

Took a few shots with this m42 lens this weekend... got some decent results. This one was at 35mm near minimum focus distance and f8 if I remember correctly.

Free bump for a good seller...
I purchased 2 lenses from Nick on 2 separate occasions and they were both hand delivered to my door. If I hadn't just purchased a K20D myself it would already be sold.

Sound like a good combination... I'm thinking about adding the 28-75mm f2.8 to my 70-200mm f2.8 but both from Tamron. (I decided to stay away from hsm and sdm for now) Make sure you hold one of those 70-200mm in your hands before you buy it. It weighs a ton! I'm willing to accept the weight as a trade off for the range and constant 2.8, but some might not.
I have my first Limited lens on the way (da 40mm) so that might change everything? Good luck with your purchase.

I guess that's why there are no posts on the subject here... perfectly explained and demonstrated. I especially like the Tamron one. Thanks for your quick responses.

I've been looking for photos of the same scene taken with different focal lengths and haven't had much luck.
It appears that the smaller the focal length the bigger the different in the field of view?
Therefore the difference between 15mm and 21mm would be huge but the difference between 35mm and 40mm (or 41mm if it existed) would be less noticeable?
I've seen many threads talking about what what lenses they should get next with great responses, positives and negatives, some even include pictures to show how great or how bad (not as often) they are.
But I haven't seen anything strictly from a focal length perspective. Should I go wider and crop? If so how much would I have to crop? Should I just use my feet and move... sure, but how much do I have to move?
I'm specifically interested in the da limiteds, but any focal length comparisons would be helpful.
I'm thinking about getting 3 new lenses, the 15mm or 21mm along with the 40mm and 70mm (starting with the 40mm currently listed in the wanted section)
If anyone has taken these photos I'd love to see them or if they could point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks -Dave-

Thanks for all your answers...
I decided to get a 1.5x and reduce the light and IQ loss. The Kenko 1.5x af dg teleconverter arrived yesterday. It's supposed to be similar to the Tamron 1.4x? I'll give it a workout this weekend and see for myself. Thanks again.

Thanks for all the answers. I think a light just went on! I did a bit for digging based on the answers I received here and found a pretty simple diagram on wiki that breaks it down.

Full Article F-number - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I guess it was the math I needed to understand.. Please correct me if I'm still wrong.
A 200mm f2.8 lens has a max opening of approx 71.5mm by adding a 2x teleconverter I increase the focal length to 400mm and the max opening remains at 71.5mm therefore my max aperture is 400/71.5=5.6 or 2 stops difference.
Plus the extra glass I guess I would lose a bit of light there too?

If I use a 2x teleconverter with my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 what will I get?
I know that it will effectively double the focal length, I will lose approximately 2 stops of light and I will see a drop in quality.
What I don't know is...
Will I end up with a 140-400mm f5.6 or a 140-400mm f2.8, with 2 stops slower shutter speeds? Will my depth of field be based on f2.8 or f5.6?
How will it effect the macro function? Infinity focus will stay the same, but does that mean that minimum focusing distance stays the same but with double the magnification? (I have better alternatives for macro... but I may not have them with me when I'm carrying this beast around)
Thanks for your help -Dave-

I tested this lens on an autofocus teleconverter to see if it would get stuck and didn't have any problems. I then tested it on my k10 and k20 and have used the lens a couple dozen times and with no problems.
I believe there are a few different style ricoh pins, some rounded and some flat on the end. The pin on my copy is rounded and has never caused a problem. Oh and the A setting works perfect on my copy, not sure it that has anything to do with the pin?

There are a number of threads about "I'm going to buy a new lens which one of these 2 lenses is better" or "what lens should I buy next" but I'm curious about which lenses in general "You" are actually using. Maybe you have great primes but never use them because you like the flexibility of a zoom or you hate zooms because they don't have the quality of primes?
Whenever I read informative posts from people that are very knowledgeable and posting great pictures, I always check their signatures and profiles to see what lenses they are using. Unfortunately some people don't list their lenses and some post "all" their lenses. Either way it doesn't tell me which ones they use most.
I know it's not all about the lenses and a great photographer can take great photos even with a disposable camera, but I'd rather "I" was the limiting factor and not my tools, because I can always learn to use them better.
So the question is... Which 3 lenses do you use most and why? Please keep in mind I'm not looking for your 3 best lenses... unless you actually use them all the time.
I'll get us started.
1. Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f2.8-4
2. Vivitar 100mm f2.8 macro
3. Rokinon 85mm f1.4
I like the focal range and don't shoot much in tight quarters.
I typically bring 6-8 lenses with me but I find these 3 lenses get used the most.
I recently made an excel spreadsheet that lists all my lenses and when I take a lens with me on an outing I put an "x" beside the lens. At the end of the year lenses with few or no marks beside them will be politely asked to leave "it's not you it's me..."
I purchased too many lenses too quickly and haven't had a chance to truly give them all a workout. I'm sure my top 3 list will evolve as I use them more.
Thanks for your time.

I'm looking for a K20D north of the border. (Don't want to pay the extra taxes to ship into Canada) Preferably with a low shutter count complete with box and all original accessories.
I don't need a grip or lenses just the camera body. Looks like the going rate is around $500 depending on condition.
Let me know if you have a k20d you are willing to part with... Thanks -Dave-

I just thought of something else that might help... What about a Neutral Density Filter? Instead of making the room darker, can I restrict the light coming into the camera with a filter? How well do those filters work with flash? Will I lose image quality?

If you look close at the above pictures you can see the shinny spots where I used a dremel. It took about 10mins. If you want to do a quick test wide open you can just take the flange off and try it on your camera.
I haven't taken many pics with it yet. I take about 90% of my photos in the spring and summer months. Most of the shots I did take were to see if the lens was actually working after my tinkering, but those looked pretty good. I'll post some shots when I take a few more.
