Thanks séamuis ... Mine is working fine right now... but at least 3 times this week it has slowed to a crawl while the rest of the internet has been fine. I am at a loss as to what is going on. I was interested when I saw the op and Tom had been experiencing similar random slow downs...

It's a conspiracy, run for the hills, wear metal pots on your heads to keep out the evil rays.

I'm like Albert, this kind of thing happens but it's on everything. I have AT&T and most evenings between 6.30 and 7, the server stops responding for a few minutes.

You may think that is funny Gary, but I just looked up and saw that the tinfoil that covers my windows has a slight rip in it.... That could be it!

I use comcast as a IP.... anyone else have comcast in this scenario? Maybe they are not talking nice.

PS it will be like that for a while and then an hour later everything will be fine. Definately not a comp issue since it is happening with two different ones at my house.
Comcast here as well

Gus,

I use Comcast too, but like you, the only affected site was this one. I have between 7 and 10 tabs open all the time, and non of them ran slow.

Cable can slow down when a lot of users get on line, but it doesn't slow for just one site, it slows for all of them, so that's not the issue. Also, IE will time out and give you the 'Page Not Found' message if it's not receiving info back from the site you are connected to, which wasn't happening for me.

So what was the issue? Here's what I suspect. When you connect from your house (Point A) to this site (Point B), you are actually going through many different servers (Points C, D, E, F, G, etc.) along the way. If one of those screws up due to mechanical, software, or usage issues, you get slowed down. Since there was no reported issues with this sites server(s), and since we were able to go to other sites with no problems, I suspect we were experiencing an issue with another relay point along the way.

As a side note, when I spell checked this message, I misspelled Comcast (COmcast). The spell checker asked if I meant compost! Maybe....

Seems strange indeed - well the usual maintenance - clear temp files, scan disk and defrag - keep temp IE files to around 100mb (instead of the default 5% ) constant sized swap file.

I find with IE7 the tabs are nice but if I run more than 5 or 6 I start to get into issues. The issues are site dependant.

The next time it is slow try this at the DOS/Command prompt.

tracert www<dot>pentaxforums<dot>com (replace the <dot> with . )

that should indicate if there is a bottle neck somewhere along the way. Gnerally anything over 100ms is 'slow' but slow is all relative

Edit: I just did that command 12 hops to get there from here 1 was 229ms all others were < 100 - response is good for me now. I am on a 3mb/1mb down/up DSL connection

Tom and Dave

Thanks guys...

Tom, that helps me understand why only this site was slow.

Dave I am computer challenged. Can you explain what this means and how to actually do it?

The next time it is slow try this at the DOS/Command prompt.

tracert www<dot>pentaxforums<dot>com (replace the <dot> with . )

What is the DOS/command Prompt?

Thanks for the help

start button>Run>type: command prompt

when the command prompt box opens type: tracert www<dot>pentaxforums<dot>com (replace the <dot> with . )

it will do a trace on the IP and every 'hop' it makes will show up as a sequential number and you will see a number in milliseconds (ms) any number of 100 or above is deemed as 'slow' any out of place high number will be a 'bottleneck' in traffic thus slowing or even timing out your connection to the site. the less hops and smaller number in milliseconds per hop the better the connection.
