I tried posting to the galllery and all I get is "sorry to big or the wrong mime type. what did I miss and where?

Is your file bigger than 1Mb? The gallery only allows files up to that size. (Although there's no limit on resolution)
Also, you can only upload .png's, .gif's, .jpg's and .jpeg's to the gallery, so check your extension as well. I hope everything works
