I think that to get around the legality of having a raffle, Adam could incorporate as a non-profit 501C Corporation and all the proceeds could go to the corporation.

Helen resposnded immediately, impressed with her customer service. What she suggested I am not in position to offer so that is that for my participaton.

A raffle would still be a good idea however the ticket price has to be resoanble (I would say no more than $25.00) and then obvioulsy enough would have to be sold to cover the cost (around 50) - of course now we are back to the legality questions.

It was fun trying to get a group together - but the reality is not enough interest was shown so I will start putting away money now on my own and hey Christmas is comming If I drop enough hints (along with some cash ) haha ...

I will be working on the legality of a raffle and I'll put one together if possible.

I love the fun aspect of this. We have a private group in my small town in SoCal that gives away a new/restored/custom Harley every year. They sell tickets all year long, they offer a date with a stipulation that enough tickets must be sold to cover the costs before the bike is given away. Each year they make a good $5,000-$10,000 profit. Tickets are not cheap at $100/ea. but here are least private organizations & clubs can have these sort of raffle give aways. I believe the key is the group awarding the prize must be a valid entity like a legally formed club with a charter and whatever other legal requirements. Also, in their case, they have a local CPA firm audit the randomness of the drawing. Vetting the drawing itself, if a raffle is chosen, can be the fly in the ointment because if not properly done there is always at least one who feels a "favorite" won or there was bias in awarding the prize.

But, this should be doable, though a raffle along with just federal interstate laws apply. Like others have mentioned not all states allow people to buy "lottery" tickets in other states directly.

All that said, I am in for maybe not a camera body but rather a "pre-paid" credit card or even a gift certificate...or I bet there would be a TON of interest in a 31mm Ltd Silver (gotta be SILVER...and not just cuz that's the last silver I need!!... ) .... I might even buy a few tix for that one!! A K-7 is only gonna get cheaper, the 31ltd however might be a better investment than the 1.25-1.5oz of gold it would buy...

If I do put something like this together officially, it won't be a raffle, due to gambling laws. We'd be looking at something along the lines of "random gifts" for forum members meeting certain criteria which are otherwise unrelated to a raffle.

Perhaps for every month the forum contributions go over goal, part of the proceeds could be invested in cameras, lenses, accessories, and the names of the donors for that month could go into that drawing. Tickets could be based on each $5, €3, $4ca or whatever exchange comes to US$ at the time, increments so if a contributor gives the equivalent of US$100, that would equate to 20 chances in the drawing. The prizes could be considered a "patronage dividend". This boosts contributions to keep the forum so great, and makes it fun hoping you'll be the lucky winner that month.

Definitely something along these lines will be done! It may take a month or three, but should otherwise be quite feasible.
