[SOLD] Very Rare Mint Pentax 400-600mm F8-F12 Refex Zoom

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Very Rare Like New Pentax 400-600mm F8-F12 Reflex Zoom

Asking Price
$745

Item Description
Very Rare Pentax SMC 400-600mm F8-F12 Reflex Zoom $745

Price Cut of $40

Important Note: I made a mistake in the title of this listing. The lens is in Like New condition & not Mint condition. I can't edit it out.

This is a very unique telephoto zoom lens that is very compact for it's focal length zoom range. I purchased this lens new and have kept it in like new condition. It's a reflex or mirror lens that are not as sharp as standard telephoto lenses but the real advantage is a very compact lens compared to a standard telephoto. The lens comes with 7 rear mount filters and accepts 67mm front filters. I also have the original Pentax hard case, hood, lens caps and box. The lens does have a very shallow depth of field, which can be a real advantage for having the main subject in focus with the background blurred out of focus. Really makes the subject stand out.

Very nice lens; it's great to see these older lenses still being sold w/ the original box and everything!

Just a quick note: there's a minuscule yet clear difference between "Mint" and "Like New" condition

QuoteQuote:
Mint: Item has no marks, scratches, or signs of use whatsoever. Packaged in original box with all manuals and accessories. 99.99% of original condition.

Like New: Item is lightly used, but shows no marks or scratches. Extremely minimal signs of use may be visible. Packaged in original box with all manuals and accessories. 98% of original condition.
The rating key is defined in the Marketplace sticky; be careful and always make sure you grade used gear appropriately. Any signs of use = not mint condition. This item is in LN condition.

Something for the collector! Never seen one of these on sale. Just wondered if the bit about a "constant" aperture might inadvertently be misleading? It does change as you zoom in from f8 to f12. A true "constant aperture" lens doesn't change f-stops as you zoom.

Look like new - any pics you took with this?

Hi demondata, Thanks for the heads up on the constant aperture. I meant to convey that the aperture on a reflex or mirror lens does not have the convenience of being adjustable because of their design with no aperture ring. I did a poor job of explaining it. I've edited the listing.

As for pictures, I've at least 20 or so great slides. I can think of a couple that I've scanned. I still shoot slide film, so I don't have the convenience of a digital system yet. The TIFF files are on another computer. I'll transfer a couple of the files and email them to you in while.

Thanks,

Jerry

Hi Jerry
Thanks for adding the pic - I doubt if the scan does the lens justice, though. I scan with a Nikon Coolscan IV and there's always a little loss of sharpness, especially with Digital Ice, and contrast is not always what I perceive it to be on the slide either.

Then again, my 13,000 slides would otherwise just fade gently away, even though they're stored in a beautiful custom-made and dark slide cabinet. Looking at the number 13000, I suddenly realize that this was a LOT of film for an amateur, but for the digital photographer it's actually not that much to take. Times have changed!

Regarding 'donuts'

Hello Jerry,

Looks like an interesting lens. Could you please post some photos that show the donuts typical with mirror lenses? or is this a rare design without such effects? I do appreciate this, thanks.

Helicopter over north Dartmoor

Anyone in doubt about this lens should grab it at this price! Never mind the rarity bit - it is a great lens and I have had a similar one for 4 years now. Great if you need the reach but not the weight or overall size.
This is a nice compact lens and is a great performer

Regards

David

EDIT: Hand held - so not pin sharp

Donut Background

Hi Nic,

This is the only photo I have with a donut background that is handy to post. I've several others but have not scanned them yet.

Cheers,

Jerry

Shameful Bump

A shameful bump plus a new image from the lens. The lens can take sharper images than this but it's one that I had easy access to post.

Cheers,

Jerry

I've followed a few of these lenses on Ebay, and this current price is a steal. You're not going to find it any cheaper than this, unless it's a banged up unit.

Best of luck, Jerry!
