[SOLD] DA*50-135mm with failed SDM

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
DA*50-135mm with failed SDM

Asking Price
$550 CDN + actual shipping

Item Description
Here's a beautiful lens that I never quite got around to using. I've heard that if you don't use a SDM lens very often, the motor could go, and I suspect this is partially what happened--I've taken few than 300 shots with it in 6 months, much preferring to shoot with primes.

Bought here on the forums from jsherman999--yes, jsherman999's perfect copy! Optically it's fantastic. Cosmetically too, but there's a nick in the hood where it was scraped on some concrete (and doing a fine job of protecting the lens in the meantime). Includes box and pouch too.

The bad news (which shouldn't really be news if you've been reading along): The SDM motor has failed, and I've been quoted $150 CDN on the repair. I was going to get it fixed and sell it anyway, but instead I figure I'll sell it discounted and the buyer can get it fixed themselves and then they'll get the warranty on the repair (6 months in Canada, according to the Pentax.ca website--check with your local repair center though). Since warranties are generally not transferrable, I think this works better for the buyer!

Or use it with a screwdrive body or MF it and save!!! [edit: I should clarify here, that there doesn't seem to be a way to bypass the SDM on SDM-enabled bodies; on a K10D with firmware 1.01, or an earlier K100D (non Super), K110, *ist series, it will work with screwdrive].

Here are some pics of the actual item:

and the only blemish--on the hood:

Here are some pics I took with it:

crop at 135mm (its weak point!) at f/2.8

I'll also include a 67mm Hoya UV filter for another $10. Or maybe I'll use it as a bargaining tool later on... Oops, inside voice! Inside voice!

Will auto-focus still work with the K10D/K20D? Or will the camera not engage the screw-drive focus if the lens is "supposed" to be SDM?

If your K10D had firmware before 1.30, it would be screwdrive only (you can actually revert to the older firmware too).

But you're right about the second part. The camera "knows" it's an SDM lens and just won't focus.

Oh right, that part! Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I've been looking for an FA 135. All would be partial trades though since this item has a higher value by a bit.

This is your chance to get the rare Manual Focus version of this fine lens!

Okay, bad joke. But if it doesn't sell, I'll have to get it fixed and sell it for more and then nobody will have any warranty and everyone will be just a little bit sadder.

Jeez, Dan. You disappear from the face of the earth and then show up selling these lenses? If you had been at the last meetup you'd know I have a FA50/1.4 to get rid of and wanted a DA35! We coulda dealt!

Oh yeah, ping Gooshin about this 50-135. He was coveting mine, and I don't think he knows what AF is.

Ha! Thanks, Mark. Sorry, but if I pinged the Toronto group every time I bought or sold a lens I'd be banned for spamming for sure!

And thanks for the tip--I'll pm Gooshin before he reads a manual or something... don't tell him it vignettes on Medium Format!

I think you mean "1.30," not "1.03."

I have two K10D bodies, one with 1.30 firmware and another with 1.20. When I attach the DA* 35-150mm to the K10D with 1.20, it uses the screwdrive AF.

I use the body with 1.20 firmware when I need to use the DA* 35-150mm with a Tamron 2X TC.

Thanks SOldBear! I've updated that! Added pics of the item too!

Sorry to hear about the SDM failing - I encourage anyone to buy this lens, it's a great copy (besides the SDM, apparently )

It's just a brilliant optic, well worth a repair cost (which would give you a brand-new SDM assembly!)

Here are some shots from my time with it:

50mm f/6.7:

135mm f/5.6, from same spot:

135mm f/4.5

Crop:

f/3.5

The colors and contrast this lens brings is beyond belief - not just the sharpness.

.

Thanks for stopping by, Jay! Amazing shots! That drool looks frozen in time!

I probably should have taken this lens out more regularly--every time I did, I loved the shots I got from it.

And yeah, that's what I was thinking re: the new SDM assembly! Plus the repair would have a warranty, so you'd get a proven copy with a new motor and a warranty!

Just being curious. How much that will be to repair the SDM?

All this SDM failing business had better be addressed officially by Pentax. The least they can do is fix it for you, free of charge, as it's obviously a defect and not something you did. It's simply incredble they can operate this way and expect anyone to buy this technology.

Sorry, just had to rant.
