The Strand was the business district of Texas in the 19th century, before the Great Storm of 1900 basically wiped out Galveston and it's commerce (~6,000 people died). By the time Galveston was rebuilt, the commerce moved to Houston, Dallas and other cities within Texas and Galveston became a small city stuck in time. However, there are lots of old buildings that survived the storm (and subsequent ones, including last year's Hurricane Rita), and it's a very photogenic place.
I took this shot with a $5 Sears lens, 135 f/2.8. Not bad for $5!
