My husband has some Coontie plants outside his work. They are a common decorative species here in south Florida. He noticed one day that there were butterflies fluttering all around them. Upon investigation on the internet, he found the name of the plant and the butterfly that spends nearly all of its short lifespan on or around this plant. Due to overharvesting, the plant and the butterfly were nearly extinguished from this planet, but have made a comeback in the last 20-30 years. The butterfly is known as an Atala Hairstreak or a Coontie Hairstreak after the plant. This photo is of the caterpillar eating the leaves of the host Coontie plant.
