Development of new technology for our digital cameras moves ahead at a fast clip with the objective of removing current shortcomings.
In this blog post we will take a look at the trends in the following areas, all of which are related to improving auto-focus and making it suitable for movie recording:
- Determining proper focus during movie recording
- Auto-focus motors
- Touch screen focus point selection
Cameras have recently been introduced that feature one or more of these improvements and we are convinced that more and more camera makers will embrace these new technologies. Not only will movie recording benefit, but also still photography, in particular in connection with mirror-less cameras and when using live view with a DSLR.
Auto-focus during Movie Recording
Before we discuss this topic let's review how most DSLRs achieve auto-focus:
Phase-detect auto-focus

With the mirror down (i.e. prior to shooting) some light is directed by the secondary mirror to a phase-detect sensor in the bottom of the camera. Phase-detect auto-focus is very fast because the circuitry can calculate how much the focusing mechanism of the lens needs to turn to achieve proper focus. However, focus must be determined prior to shooting (before the mirrors flip up and allow the light to hit the imaging sensor) and is therefore not available during movie recording. Naturally, this technology is not available on a mirror-less camera at all.
Contrast-detect auto-focus
This is the technology pioneered by point and shoot cameras. Proper focus is determined by the camera in a trial and error fashion by focusing the lens back and forth until maximum contrast is achieved of the image formed on the sensor. This technology lends itself to mirror-less cameras and is also used on DSLRs in live view mode (where the mirror up and out of the way). However, while more accurate than phase-detect auto-focus, contrast-detect auto-focus is too slow to be useable during movie recording.
The solution for movie recording
Auto-focus during movie recording is generally not available, neither on DSLRs nor on mirror-less, since neither phase-detect nor contrast-detect as currently implemented are suitable solutions.
Sony tried a stop-gap solution in some of their Alpha DSLR models. These cameras had a fixed mirror that would direct light to the phase detect auto-focus sensor also during the recording of movies. The resulting light loss of the image formed on the imaging sensor hurts image quality visibly, however, and this technology is bound to flop just like the film cameras before it that used the fixed mirror approach flopped.
What we will see instead in widespread use is imaging sensors with several phase detection sensors embedded in the surface. Canon has recently introduced this technology with the EOS Rebel T4i. Although it has only one phase detection auto-focus point (in the center) this is a huge step forward towards creating an auto-focus system that is fast enough in movie mode. This technology lends itself to mirror-less as well as DSLR cameras where the mirror is flipped up during movie recording.
Auto-focus Motors
The other issues with auto focus during movie recording are noise from the auto-focus motor and gears and jerky movement. Today's lenses were designed for still photography where these issues were of less importance.
To be suitable for use during movie recording the motor must not only be built into the lens for speed and accuracy, but also designed to be silent and with smooth movement. In the case of Canon this has called for a new motor type, stepping motors, as Panasonic has pioneered borrowing the technology from their video cameras. Canon has recently gone in this direction too, by introducing two lenses with stepping motors. Whether or not Pentax's DC motors are up to the task of continuous auto-focus in movie mode remains to be seen. Perhaps Pentax will also have to introduce a new motor type as well (and firmware to drive it).
Touch Screen Focus Point Selection
Many DSLR and mirror-less cameras allow the photographer to select which area of the image the auto-focus system should be concerned with. This is usually achieved by a four-way controller or joystick and is slow and cumbersome. We predict that we will see widespread availability of a much more user friendly touch screen solution like the one recently introduced on Canon's EOS M mirror-less, where the photographer just taps the rear LCD monitor on the area that shall be in focus.

Sony's Nex 5n had a Touch Screen Focus Point long before Canon's M mirrorless. Its been talked about any number of times on PF over the last year.
Good topic for article but not as accurate or complete as I'd like.

First, there are a number of cameras that offer contrast-detect focus during movie mode with varying degrees of success. Many Panasonic Lumix models do a reasonable job at this, while many cameras don't permit it at all.
Regarding sensor-embedded phase-detect: "Canon has recently introduced this technology with the EOS Rebel T4i"
Maybe 'introduced' in a DSLR, but Nikon 1 system has already had this, and it also had appeared in some compacts (Fujifilm, IIRC) a few years ago.

Touch screen is incredibly useful in movie mode for pull focus. Just touch on the area you want in focus and the camera should pull focus to that area. Swivel screen is very useful for stills and for video. Unfortunately Pentax is way behind the curve at the moment.
I think the touch screen focus system for mirror less cameras and movie mode in DSLR cameras. The lens should be quite though. On the other hand the the AF for still cameras should be improved a lot.
1. A touch pad (similar to the one in laptops for mouse cursor) accessible by thumb that traces the focus points while you move over it and a dedicated button accessible by middle finger to select the activated AF point would make it easier.
2. The focus points should be visible in the viewfinder and the one where the cursor moves should be highlighted.

My GF2 does the touch/focus thing and I'm OK with it since that's the only viewing screen I have. I have not used it in movie mode though. So many video improvements that are not relevant to me, but I accept the inevitable - and will probably do more of it in the future since it will be there anyway.
Touchscreen is definitely a no-no for me. I want to change settings without taking the camera away from my eye. Give me useful tactile buttons that I can feel thanks. :-) Leave the touch screens for the point and shoot crowd.
What Pentax needs is a better and faster way to change focusing options. Using any type of touch screen would not be one of the faster ways to do so.
Using existing Pentax tech, simply using focus lock would be the fastest method. For the future, perhaps Pentax could "borrow" something such as a version of Canon's eye detection focusing where the focusing zone can follow ones eye movement patterns. Also another small variation of existing tech, able to switch focusing zones faster; or switching from average - to selective - to spot, etc... faster.
As for auto focusing motors. I find it a bit ironic that one of Pentax's higher priced lens'; the Pentax 16-50 f2.8 sdm - also happens to be by far the worst Pentax lens on the (existing) market - perhaps even worse than any of the lens' for the PK mount. It has the worst reliability problems of any lens on the PK market. I've seen a considerable amount of them fail in about one year.
Really hope that Pentax eliminates this one lens and comes out with anything better.
Indeed it was Fuji and Nikon pulled it to the next level with their 1 serries, why solely Canon is named is beyond me since they did nothing special.
I think it was Fujifilm who was first with the sensor with a built-in phase detection in it. It was for a compact, so it had much faster AF than other cameras of its kind.
A swivel screen is very handy IMO. You can also turn it in towards the camera to protect it. A good thing to have for many reasons. Also a touch screen, but should be able to turn it off if you want to IMO.
While I agree that touch screen is not very useful except if tripod mounted, a swivel screen is very useful. I had both the Olympus E-3 and E-5 plus the Panasonic GH2. All three made setup of low macro shots a breeze. Also over the heads of the crowd shots are much easier. Both Oly's were water resistant too.
Touchscreen is a no-no for me, that's just like a swivel screen, looks cool but will do more harm than good.
