I used to hope to see this lens on market between 100 to 150. Similar price w/ Canikons' F1.8. Now I just want to slap my face.
As mentioned in the description on B&H twice, it is full-frame compatible.
is it a better deal to go for DA 35MM F2.4 for portrait (low light)work than this new 50mm one ?
The price is insanely high. The equivalent from Canikon is $100-$120 and they work on FF camera!
Pentax should have put the PH-RBA connector of the kitlens on it. You could just use the kit lens hood on it.
Yeah, I wish it came with a lens hood as well. The 52mm filter size is less of an issue for me because I don't expect I'll be using many filters on this lens very often. A simple UV filter - even a B+W - isn't that expensive. And I can find a very nice hood on either Amazon or eBay for less than ten bucks. I expect to pre-order this lens very soon.
Should have been 55mm to position it as an 85mm eq. "portrait" lens. No reason to stick with 50mm for APS-C.
A new FA 50 f1.4 for $243.00??? I wish. Its $349.95 at B&H - I have been looking for a better deal for a while (think I saw it at $299 at one stage but missed it). Am I missing something?
My two pentax primes are the 35mm macro and the FA 50 f1.8. The 50 is superb. hmm...
Let's see if I got this straight:
Max f/1.8 aperture.
Cheap plastic coupling mount subject to faster wear.
No distance scale.
Works only on APSC cameras.
$249.95
And we compare this to the already available Pentax f/1.4 50mm which has:
A distance scale.
Ability to work on both APSC and full-frame 35mm Pentax cameras.
A better-built metal coupling mount.
Max f/1.4 aperture.
$243.00, even less used
"Less for more" oughta be the sales pitch for this one.

$250?! What are they thinking, unless this lens is an modern marvel of optical engineering and blows all other 1.7/1.8's out of the water I can see no reason not to pony of the extra money for a fa50 1.4 This way too expensive for a nifty 50.
Except the 35 is now $219.95. So I wouldn't hold your breath for price drops - I guess Pentax are positioning their lenses at higher price than the competition these days.
Would like to have AF but my A50 f1.7 will do for now.
Only IQ matters. It's 30 bucks more than the 35mm. So you'll end up paying a little less than $200. Not so much when it delivers like the DA 35mm F2.4.
Way too expensive. They'd best have forged the glass entirely out of pixie dust.
expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's actually not as bad a price as I was expecting. I have plenty of 52mm filters lying around, so this will be a must-buy for me. I might have to look for a deal, though.
...and I just realized the filter thread is 52mm on this lens, not 49mm like the DA 35mm AL 2.4 - Nevertheless, I'm sure making the appropriate adjustments to my previous solution will do the trick.
I will definitely buy this lens, though I agree it's slightly overpriced. Shave it down to an even $200 and I'd be much happier. Regarding the hood issue, I plan on using the same solution I came up with for my DA 35mm 2.4 AL - a 49mm Kalt metal hood with a matching 58mm Pentax (or other brand) pinch cap. The hood doesn't add any width to the lens, so it's still fits quite nicely in camera bags when stored with the hood attached. Plus, the cap clings to the interior ridges of the hood, so you can also store it with the new cap in place. Search for "da 35mm al hood solution" on the forum if you want to see photos of the DA 35mm AL 2.4 with the hood and cap in place.
A bit more expensive than I was hoping.
Both Canon & Nikon 50mm F1.8 primes are 114$ on BH Photo Video. I would find it acceptable at most at 150 $...
i'd rather get a used FA 50 1.4..
No hood is a bummer for me. Anybody know if there's a different bayonet hood that would fit? Or if there will be an optional hood released? (I don't like rubber hoods, or the screw-in type hoods).
No hood included. It's no a big deal to bye rubber hood, but DA 35/2.4 - 49 mm filter size, this one - 52 mm %).
I would like to see different colors, like DA 35/2.4.
$250.... already in plastic mount, would throw in a lens bag, a lens hood kill Pentax? >_< those two probably increase cost by $0.50, but make your customer happy. I think most expect it to be $200.
$100 too expensive!
Roughly the same cost as Nikon 50mm f1.8G. And the Nikon has SWM and it is arguably Nikon's best 50mm currently. Hopefully it performs just as well optically.
Nice
