New Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 Announced for Pentax

Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro HSM "Contemporary" Zoom · Posted on 01-08-2013 in Pentax-Related News
New Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 Announced for Pentax

Sigma has just officially announced the new "contemporary" series 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro HSM walkaround lens for Pentax.  It is now available for pre-order for $499 (about the same price as the Pentax 17-70mm).

Old Sigma 17-70mm's and Pentax 17-70mm Comparison

This is the third Sigma 17-70mm lens, which promises to bring better optics and improved build quality compared to its predecessors.  In our in-depth comparative review of the Sigma 17-70mm's and Pentax 17-70mm, we found both Sigmas to already be a little bit better than the Pentax, so we can't wait to test this new lens, as it already seems like a compelling option for an everyday zoom!

For the full specifications of this new lens, please visit its entry in our Sigma lens database.

i am liking the look of the new Siggys coming up. There is a sleekness to the design that has been missing from the current crop of lenses. The dilemma us Pentaxians will soon have is now going to be whether to go FA 31 Limited or Sigma 35 1.4... It's a good dilemma to have though.

Yeah, good news! If nothing else, it is a handsome lens.

I wish 17-70mm would have constant 2.8 ! i think i still have to stick to my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens !

review please.

I can't wait to get my hands on this lens, and their new 35/1.4. Hearing of those two lenses in Pentax mount is why I just bought a K-5 in the first place.

I'm looking forward to the release of this lens; looks to be slightly lighter weight by design, hopefully with optics meeting/exceeding V1. Curious if there will be opportunity for lens to be reviewed before its officially released (I dont know if the majors give "previews" or give copies of a new release for review...would be nice)

Luckily, I don't think Sigma will drop K mount any time soon, as they hardly require a retool to manufacture K lenses, considering SA mount is K mount+EOS electronic systems.

On Sigma's page for this lens, when the drop down for the camera match is selected, Pentax is not an option.

However, B&H does have it on preorder status for the Pentax system.

Looks like it will be released early February.

I'm also thinking to get a better lens than my DA18-135. Hopefully this lens is as good as Tamron 28-75!

Eulogy [Delete] Jan 8th, 2013 4:29PM

Yay! A third party K lens that isn't going to vignette or display improper distance scaling!

Van Zan [Delete] Jan 8th, 2013 3:48PM

Why not WR? WHY? :-)

cbope [Delete] Jan 8th, 2013 3:34PM

Hmmm... I've been interested in a zoom of this focal length as a walkaround lens for my K-5 for some time. I've never been sold on the DA 17-70 and the DA* 16-50 just has too many issues to take a risk for me. This might hit the sweet spot if the optical performance is decent (e.g. better than the kit DA 18-55).

Adam [Delete] Jan 8th, 2013 3:19PM

This is a DC (APS-C only) lens. Don't expect any compact FF zooms to go as wide as 17mm!

sunny16 [Delete] Jan 8th, 2013 3:16PM

If it tests well, could be a nice compromise between the slightly slower kits and the high-speed "professional" DA* zooms.

All of these new "Series" lenses by Sigma are full-frame, correct?

I am looking forward the reviews on this lens! I have been interested in a 17-70 for a while now, assuming it offers better optical quality than my 18-135. I enjoy my f/2.8 constant 18-50 zoom but sometimes it falls a little short (literally). The extra 20mm telephoto reach would be very handy, as is the slightly wider 17mm perspective. Plus it's HSM for quick and quiet focusing. And I like the fact that it's as compact as the original (version 1) Sigma 17-70; the heavier version 2 17-70 turned me off from that one.
