I am really starting to believe that Pentax is the brand out of Nikon and Canon that is hardest to predict on their next move.
This is the usual practice of shooting prices high, then offer it at a discount so retailers can show on their sites: from $ 900 to $ 500. Great deal!
Crap!!! I just bought an "antique" hasselblad lens to play with because the prices on the pentax ones weren't what I was willing to pay.
The effect on me is that I wait and wait and only buy when I can screw the best possible price, no matter where I have to go to buy. The effect on Pentax will be that demand will fluctuate all over the place, making production control harder, and on retailers the same fluctuating demand, and so difficulty controlling stock. What if you buy a carton of Pentax lenses at this month's price, then find you can't sell them when Px drops prices next month? Pretty stupid marketing IMO.
Yep it is $899 for da 16-50 and da 50-135, and da 21 went down to $550
Seems like buying Pentax lenses is a bit of a lottery (or at least requires a lot of patience). Still.... maybe I will be able to get a DA35 f2.4 after all - nearly there for me.
Well, I just checked the DA* 16-50mm at B&H (as of Friday Jul. 6th 2:25pm PDT) and it has dropped to $899 (another $100 on top of the $100 drop from yesterday), so in the end it is $200 lower than in June. Go figure what in the world is going on with the Pentax pricing roller coaster.
Strange indeed. Like the last drop, I doubt this one will last long, as Adorama and Abe's have not followed suit. If you need a new DA lens, this would seem to be a good time.
Coincidence these drops fell around the same day the K-30 hit?
The great news in all of this is that I have miraculously recovered from a serious case of LBA. Haven't looked at lenses since the original price increase announcement. Considering I purchased about 8 lenses the 12 months before that (and sold 6 or 7), i'd say that is a complete recovery ;-)
Only Sigma, Tamron, and FA lenses have been selling after the price increase. I don't blame you guys!
How's maximum assured pricing working out for PRIC? Adam, how are the sales #s for lenses that you have for say the month prior to the Maximum Assured Pricing and 1 Month after it going into effect? I'll guess that sales tanked, am I right?
Looks like they reeled in another sucker -- me. Just ordered my DA40 Ltd, when I would have otherwise waited and gone for the FA43 Ltd.
I spot checked a couple of these lenses at Adorama, and the prices are still where they were last week.
The question is, for how long?
These prices seem to only be offered by B & H and to some extent Amazon. Adorama, Abes of Maine, etc., have not yet followed suit.
This is the typical "big company tactic" for pricing "adjustment":
Just as the oil companies,
1. You suddenly and sharply increase the price.
2. You let consumers absorb the shock and get used to "live with it".
3. You decrease the price just a tad, but not to the previous lower prices.
4. Consumers are now happy: "Hey" We got a deal!"

Its worse than that. The PRIAC president made a statement on his blog, and a B&H rep made a statement on PF. The two statements do not agree with each other in any way, shape or form. Nor does the PRIAC statement match observed price changes.
These lens price ups and downs are idiotic. They are the worst of both worlds. You cannot get a lens for a reasonable price when you need it and it does not make sense for brick and mortar stores to sell these lenses either because most will be able to wait till the next online sale out. Add to this that neither the president of Pentax USA nor store representatives provide any insights into this mad situation.

Any chance the retailers are just doing this on their own to make some sales (and then when/if Pentax complains, they raise them again?)
