Pentax Optio VS20

It looks like the first new Pentax compact of 2012 is here- the Optio VS20!  New of this new compact, posted via Norwegian press channel, suggests that the camera has some very exciting highlights and is a truly-modern compact camera.

Key Specifications

  • 16 megapixel CCD Sensor
  • 3-inch LCD
  • 20x zoom lens (28-560mm equiv.)
  • Minimum focusing distance of 10mm in macro mode
  • Sensor-shift Shake Reduction
  • ISO 6400
  • HD video recording (720p)

Though it hasn't yet officially been announced in the US, sources say that the camera is expected to launch next month at an MSRP of around $249.

Although the camera is still running Pentax's beginner-friendly point-and-shoot firmware with automatic shooting mode selection, three new filters have been added to this camera, namely:

  • Fish-eye mode
  • Hand-held night snap mode
  • Sketch mode

The VS20 also has an innovative shutter release button on the side in order to make verticals a snap, and for group or family shots, it will fully support Pentax's IR remote control.  The makers also state that the new night snap mode will greatly reduce image noise.

I am excited about this camera! The zoom, the cool looking design! The price looks good, there may be less expensive P&S but if the picture quality is up there this would be a terrific camera for work or play, when a DSLR is just too much.

guys, it just a basic P&S, for average consumer. Every brand renew it's P&S line every year, Pentax do exactly the same as Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Kodak, etc ...

So stop complaining like spoiled children ...

This is their innovation? A button on the side? A button? On the side?
The writing is on the wall for compact P&S, Pentax needs to get serious and fast.

Does anyone have any info if the sensor in this is the same as in the Sony DSC-HX9V?

Smeggypants [Delete] Jan 25th, 2012 10:57PM

Should have been 10MP and better Dynamic range

ElrondElensar [Delete] Jan 25th, 2012 10:05PM

16 MP on a compact is a last year news

Alizarine [Delete] Jan 25th, 2012 5:25PM

This... is the new camera we were all waiting for? A compact? Sure is mirrorless...

but design-wise..it follows somewhat the Linhof 220. Question is, will the ILC models be patterned after this too?

s4int [Delete] Jan 25th, 2012 5:10PM

@internetpilot: If it has an orientation sensor it would be easy to disable the appropriate shutter release button. Now, if such a function were to be implemented is another question.

Good, clean design. We'll see how well it performs but I like what I see.

I'm looking forward to learning more about the hand-helf night snap mode. I've only used auto-helf. Adam ??

Mallee Boy [Delete] Jan 25th, 2012 3:33PM

If it takes a half decent photo it will be the perfect travel companion.

Internetpilot [Delete] Jan 25th, 2012 2:54PM

That second shutter button looks like it would be annoying more than useful.

mrmentera [Delete] Jan 25th, 2012 2:50PM

Wow! 16 megapixels!!!
