Fujifilm X100s Review

Menus

For reference we present a brief overview of the menus. The main menus are called up by pressing the Menu/OK button in the center of the four way controller. Only the nemus pertinent to the current shooting mode of the camera will be accessible. For example, to set the options of the Movie menu, the camera must be in movie mode.

Shooting Menu

The shooting menu has five top-level pages:

Many of the settings are covered elsewhere in the review. Here we shall elaborate on just two of the settings from the first page:

  • Image Size: Here you select resolution (L (approx. 16 MP), M (approx. 8 MP), or S (approx. 4 MP)) and aspect ratio (3:2, 16:9, or 1:1).
  • Image Quality: Here you set whether to soot in RAW, JPG, or both, and which of two JPG compression levels to use, Fine or Normal

Some frequently used settings are burried too deep - as an example it takes 5 steps to set the ND filter and get back out. Luckily, the ND filter can be assigned to the Fn button (but then of course you cannot have your other favorite item (like ISO) assigned to Fn).

Movie Menu

We cover this menu on the movie page.

Playback Menu

The playback menu has three pages:

Setup Menu

Finally we have the set-up menu:

Quick Menu

The Q button brings up the Quick Menu which allows adjustment of those settings that likely are the most frequently used.

The Quick Menu gives easy access to the following:

  • Top row
    • Select a set of customized settings (here the default BASIC is shown)
    • Sensitivity (ISO)
    • Dynamic range expansion (DR100 aka off, DR200, DR400, or Auto)
    • White balance: Select Auto or a preset. This is quite superfluous since there is a dedicated button for white balance and fine tuning of same
  • Second row
    • Noise reduction strength. "0" means default value, not OFF. NR cannot be turned off
    • Resolution (16-8-4 MP) and aspect ratio
    • File format and JPG compression ratio
    • Film simulation
  • Third row
    • Highlight tone
    • Shadow tone
    • Color density
    • Sharpness
  • Last row
    • Self timer (2s, 10s or off)
    • Autofocus mode: Area as selected by user, auto, and tracking. Changes cannot be made when the camera is set to manual focus (as shown here)
    • Flash setting (superfluous since there is a dedicated button for flash)
    • Brightness of the LCD monitor

Fn Menu

Holding the Fn button down for one second brings up a menu from which to pick the function to assign to Fn. This way of accessing the Fn setting options is very clever and easy to use in the field!

There are quite a number of funtions that can be assigned to Fn. We wish that there was at least one additional Fn button available!
