Godox Ving V850 System Review

Transmitter Controls

I expect that, in most circumstances, the V850 will be used in combination with the RF-16s transmitter system. Godox probably assumed the same, because the system seems designed this way. While it is perfectly possible to use the flash on a hotshoe or in slave mode, the system comes to life when controlled remotely. Any studio system benefits greatly from being remotely controlled. The photographer can tune the output of his flashes without moving from its position. Models are not kept waiting, do not lose focus, adjustments are faster and can be more frequent. A remote power control means it is easier to use the flash inside an umbrella softbox (the kind where the flash is not easily accessible, like a Westcott Apollo).

The Godox system delivers just as expected. Power adjustments are easy to do for any flash group. Changes are immediately and automatically transferred. The user can request a beep conformation if operating from a long distance. The beep can also confirm that the flash is ready to fire, though with the V850’s fast (and constant) recycle rate, this is not likely to be very often required.

The controls are easy to operate, and very straightforward. The manual is not required to understand how the system works. The screen gives access to all the useful information, despite its small size. The buttons layout is logical and intuitive; taking control of your studio system is easy and natural.

One could wish for more refined or varied controls. For instance, there is no direct way to turn off a flash or group, the user must lower the power down to the OFF setting. Not a big pain, but it does require a few more clicks. The zoom head cannot be controlled remotely. In other words, the system is simple, for better and for worse. One must simply understand the range of controls it does offer, and decide if these are sufficient.
