HD vs. SMC Pentax-DA 18-50mm F4-5.6

What's in the Box

On this page, we will be taking a look at what accessories are included with the HD Pentax-DA 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE, the SMC Pentax-DA L 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE, and the SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR lenses. These are the two variants of the new 18-50mm zoom and the premium boxed version of the older 18-55mm.

Standalone HD DA 18-50mm

The HD DA variant of the 18-50mm lens comes in its own box and, as of the writing of this review, it is not available in any camera kits.  It comes with the standard lineup of accessories minus a case.

  • Dedicated bayonet hood, window shaped, PH-RBJ58
  • User manual
  • Warranty information / serial number card
  • Front and rear caps
  • Dedicated box

The DA version features a plastic push-on cap (O-LW67A, 67mm) that covers the hood. It can also be mounted directly on the lens.  It does not latch on as securely as the clip-on cap supplied with the DA L version.

The rear cap is the cheaper rubber push type with no bayonet fittings.

Kit SMC DA L 18-50mm

The SMC DA L variant of the 18-50mm is designed as a kit lens and debuted alongside the Pentax K-S2 body.  It comes with the following accessories:

  • User manual*
  • Warranty information / serial number card*
  • Front and rear caps

The supplied front cap (O-LC58, 58mm) is center-pinch type, something we always like to see.

Standalone SMC DA 18-55mm WR

The older DA 18-55mm WR is being phased out in bundles but will continue being available as a stand-alone boxed lens.  It includes:

  • Dedicated bayonet hood, petal shaped, PH-RBC52
  • User manual
  • Warranty information / serial number card
  • Front and rear caps
  • Dedicated box

The front cap (O-LC52, 52mm) has a center pinch, something we always like to see. With the petal hood, it can be removed without taking off the hood.

The rear cap is also the cheaper rubber-push type with no bayonet fittings.

As you can see, the main difference between the box contents of the DA 18-55mm and DA 18-50mm is the type of hood and front cap.

Warranty

Ricoh Imaging's warranty coverage depends on the country in which you purchase your lens or camera. International warranties are no longer offered in any region due to legal and practical complications.

  • In the US, the standard warranty is good for one year.
  • In Canada and Europe, two years of coverage are included.
  • In Australia, the warranty is good for one year.

The only requirement for warranty work is that you keep your receipts. No registration is necessary.

Please check with your local Ricoh Imaging dealer or representative for warranty information in other areas. Note that warranty service will only be honored for lenses purchased from authorized Pentax dealers.  Saving some money upfront by buying grey market could therefore cost you in the long run.
