P-TTL Test Images

P-TTL With Manual Exposure Mode

Manual exposure mode with P-TTL provides full control over depth of field and as we see from the examples below, the exposure is consistent over a given lens (but not across lenses). We also compared live view with using the viewfinder and as expected found no difference between the two.

  • Live view (rows 1 through 5)
  • View finder (rows 6 through 10)

Setup:

  • Pentax K-3 in M exposure mode
  • Unprocessed JPGs (except for scaling)
  • Autofocus with center focus point using view finder
  • smc Pentax-A, -F, and -FA 50mm F1.4 lenses
  • AF 360 FGZ II flash mounted on camera
  • Direct flash, zoom head at 48 mm matching the lenses

Observations:

  • F and FA lenses perform virtually identical
  • F and FA images are underexposed
  • The A lens tends towards overexposure with a few blown highlights
  • Flash zoom must be set manually with A-series lenses
  • The exposure is the same whether one uses live view or the view finder
