Pentax 645Z Review

White Balance

The white balance settings page is brought up with the four-way controller:

The available settings are the same as found on other recent Pentax DSLRs. The white balance of each of these settings can be fine tuned by hitting the INFO button and the result can be checked by turning the depth of field preview lever - this will take and display (but not save) an image with the white balance as it has been set.

The presets available are:

  • Auto White Balance and Multi Auto White Balance. The latter preset attempts to correct in case the various parts of the scene is lit by light sources of different color temperature. In many situations, Multi Auto White Balance delivers no benefit, but we were able to take advantage of it in unusually-lit indoor scenarios, such as a ballroom with plenty of lights.
  • Daylight
  • Shade
  • Cloudy
  • Fluorescent with four options: Daylight Color, Daylight White, Cool White, and Warm White
  • Tungsten
  • Flash
  • Color Temperature Enhancement (CTE)
  • Manual White Balance. The white balance is set by taking a test shot or using an image from the SD card. Allows for saving three settings
  • Manually enter the color temperature in Kelvin.  Allows for saving three settings.

We found the auto white balance very accurate and never used any of the other settings.

Verdict

Auto white balance is very accurate, but nevertheless, white balance can be customized to your heart's desire, so nothing is missing here.
