Pentax Optio WG-2 Review

Introduction & Video Review

Welcome to the PentaxForums.com in-depth review of the Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS "adventureproof" (waterproof) compact digital camera!

Pentax Optio WG-2 Waterproof Camera

The Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS represents the 13th generation of waterproof digital cameras from Pentax.  It's essentially an upgraded version of its predecessor, the Optio WG-1, featuring a re-styled exterior, new colors, and significantly improved specifications. Like its predecessor, it's available both with and without a GPS module, which allows you to geotag your photos and log tracks. The two versions of the camera are otherwise identical except that that non-GPS version comes in different colors. According to Pentax, the camera is waterproof (to 40ft / 12m), coldproof (to 14°F, -10°C), crushproof, and shockproof, meaning it the perfect companion for the adventurous photographer.  You can take this camera with you where other electronics would likely break or get damaged, and on top of that, it shoots fantastic videos and has a wide range of shooting modes and innovative features.  It has a 5x zoom lens which corresponds to a 28-140mm lens on a film DSLR, and focuses on objects as close as 1 centimeter away!

The WG-2 was announced on February 7th, 2012 and arrived at US retailers in early March.  Our review is based on a production model.

Below you can see what cosmetic changes Pentax have made to the WG-2 (left) since its predecessor (right):
