Topaz DeNoise 5 Review

Preview and Adjustments

The preview settings go hand in and with the detailed noise adjustments.

Preview Settings

Just below the navigation pane we have two panes which affect how the image looks in the preview pane making it easier to perform the right adjustments. These settings do not affect the generated image.

Preview adjustments

Let's take the second pane first: This pane adjusts the brightness of the preview image making the noise easier to see. The Auto Brightness setting only affects the preview, not the final image as saved.

The fist pane has a number of radio buttons with which to select which type of noise to look at:

  • RGB: The preview image is shown as it will look when displayed
  • Luma: Shows the brightness only
  • Color: Shows the color without luminance information
  • Red: Shows the red channel only
  • Blue: Shows the blue channel only

Previews

The above illustrates how the image will look in the preview window in each of the five preview modes.

Adjustment Pane

Adjustment Panel

After first selecting a preset as the starting point you can continue in the adjustment panel to make specific adjustments to the several sliders affecting noise and resolution, or you can go right to the adjustment panel without using a preview as we have done here. Hit the Reset All button for setting all sliders to zero.

The many sliders can appear overwhelming at first, but the User's Guide comes to the rescue explaining the use of the sliders in combination with the various preview modes. One basically works from left to right of the preview modes starting with the Luma preview mode.

In Luma preview you adjust overall strength, shadow and highlight noise and move on to the Detail Recovery to bring back as much resolution that you can.

You may then want to move on to the Red and Blue channel previews and adjust the matching sliders accordingly.

The Clean Color slider is for removing color blocks that may have formed as a result of the above adjustments.

If the image after these adjustments have a hazy look the haze can be taken care of with the Correct Black Level slider.

For a more film-like look grain can be added. Since the grain is grey it doesn't affect the color balance of the image.
