Topaz ReMask 5 Review

Conclusion

Topaz ReMask 5 is a demanding but rewarding masking tool.

It's interesting reading the reactions of users of ReMask on its own site. Despite praise for its features a substantial minority express disappointment with ReMask. This was my initial response, as well.

ReMask can be a challenge for users with little experience of masking. Getting a mask right requires patience and a lot of time. After a while, you realise that ReMask is a toolkit for building and refining masks. It has some useful brushes. It is not a one-click "magic brush" solution for creating masks or composites.

It can't do all the thinking to get a quality result. The quality is up to you.  Rather its array of brushes and ability to focus on pixel level traces make it a go-to tool for those that want to try their hand with compositing and controlled HDR.

The more time you invest using ReMask, the more satisfying the result. I estimate it takes about a day of playing with its tools to understand its benefits and limitations. Also I'd allow another day to check out the various video streaming tutorials. So far, there are only three that cover the latest version 5. However tutorials on versions 4 and 3 are fine for tips on tricky selection and discarding issues such as when to use a Transparency brush, when to use the Blue ("compute") brush or how the Recovery slider works in practice.

That said, ReMask does not require Photoshop layers for it to work. But it does not support adding shadows— something vital for credible composites. So its compositing needs more work at this stage.

But if you require masking beyond the usual dodging, burning and healing brush tools, ReMask is your best bet. We'd rate it good value for money.  It costs $69.99 and is often available for less, either standalone or in the Topaz bundle.

Your real investment will be putting time in to build and refine your masks.
