DIY: A Pentax Underwater Case

The Flash and Conclusion

Here you can see the flash that came with the original Sea&Sea kit.  The flash is TTL (not P-TTL), so it will only work in manual mode on Pentax DSLRs other than the *ist D and DS.  In order to hook up the flash, you need to adapt some of the wiring inside the case.

You would need to take a hotshoe adapter and connect the wiring to plug of the underwater flash.  The plug is shown in Figure 15.  Don't try this unless you are comfortable working with electronics and have an electrical diagram of the Pentax hot shot contacts.  I didn't bother with this myself; instead, I plan on replacing the old flash unit with something more modern and using a native cable.

Since I have obtained two underwater casings, I plan on drilling a window in one of them and covering it with plexiglass so that I can use live view.  This case looks like it will fit many other cameras, so if you're into Do-It-Yourself projects, this would certainly be an interesting one!  Stay tuned for a post about this in the near future on the forum, as I visit the site regularly.
