What to Pack When You Backpack

Your Mission

Once the “necessities”, i.e. food, water, clothing, shelter, and whiskey ;) are packed, there usually isn’t a ton of room left over for photographic gear.  It is always important to be mindful of weight and space with other supplies, but seeing as how this is Pentax/photography related, I will save that for another article.  Think about what the purpose of you trip is.  Are you trying to cover as much ground as possible?  Do you plan on hunting out wildlife with a telephoto, focusing on small wildflowers with a macro, or capturing sweeping views with a wide angle.  Will you be shooting mostly during the day or are sunrises/sunsets your bread and butter?  Will you dedicate time and precious battery power to a star trailed long exposure or time lapse?  Do you expect rain, extreme cold, or dusty/sandy conditions.  These considerations may seem trivial and unnecessary, but so is carrying extra weight on a lengthy hike.

Mission Accomplished

Tent with a mountain view....mission accomplished.
