Description:
There are at least two versions of the tokina made swappable mount 300mm. Pics 1, 2 show the earlier f5.5 T4 version with milled focus ring and integral tripod mount; 3, 4 the later f5.6 TX version with rubber focus ring. Note that the f5.5 version was also sold by tokina: tokina 300mm f5.5 tele-auto; and by soligor.
Then there are fixed mount versions (pics 5,6), almost identical in looks and specs to the later TX version, also 37xxxx serials. Most noticeable distinguishing mark is the f-stop numbers. Probably the same as the tokina RMC 300mm. These can be found in all the mounts of the era.

Note that the T4/TX M42 mounts have a switch to stop down but it is a momentary one - you have to hold it. For a discussion on modding see this thread.
How to make a TX- PK mount work on a T4 lens (it will fit but you can't move the aperture ring) - see this thread.

Optical construction: 4 elements in ?4 groups
aperture: f5.5/5.6 - f22, single stop clicks
iris: 8 blades
Focus throw: ~ 270 deg
Filter: 58mm.
Weight:~ 0.85kg (v1);
length v1: min ~ 16cm with mount; max ~21.5cm with hood
Tripod mount and hood v1. Just a hood v2

Review by blogger koen Kallenberg of later TX version here.
sample pics with TX v1 here and here.

More about T4 lenses.

Also sold in the USA by Sears.
Mount Type: Third-party (adapter required)

Pros: Very solid build, smooth focusing, built-in hood
Cons: Optically not quite up to modern standards

Bought this lens used close to 40 years ago with a matching 2x teleconverter. Useful when you need a really long lens (I rarely do, though!). Very solid construction, smooth focusing (manual only) but optically not quite up to modern standards. With the teleconverter it is considerably worse but if you really need to go to 600 mm it is definitely usable.
