Pros: Works well when line of sight is available (within distance limits)
Cons: Operational distance limited

I use this remote with my K-1 and it works great. This remote is small and easily carried (almost too small - could get lost easily). The battery is replaceable and the remote is simple to use. It lacks power so distance range is limited and if there is bright ambient light, that makes things worse, but for normal conditions, control out to 15 feet is possible reliably. It's better than a wired remote because anytime you connect something to the camera innards, you risk electronic damage (thought that risk is slight) by bringing in something like an electro-static discharge. This remote has no connection to the camera other than light so all is well. The downside to that is it won't work around corners or where the light beam can't get to the camera sensor(s), so in some applications, it's out. Otherwise, great accessory to have in the bag.

Pros: Works flawlessly, inexpensive off-brand alternative, removable battery.
Cons: Less than tank-like build, no weather-sealing.

Easily one of my most cost-effective gear purchases. I do own the original Pentax Remote Control F, whose battery, however, will die someday and force me to use a micro screwdriver on the minuscule screws that hold together the remote case if I want to replace it. Also, while I appreciate miniaturization, the Remote Control F is so small that I'm a bit afraid I might lose it or leave it behind somewhere. I would have likely opted for Pentax's own Remote Control Waterproof O-RC1, but that one is pricey and comes with an irremovable battery (er, how sustainable is that, Ricoh?).

Enter JJC's RM-E7. Cheap as dirt, yet it looks pretty elegant and is not unpleasant to the touch. It's powered by a common CR2025-type battery, which can be easily replaced. In fact, I had to do that right away because the battery inside was DOA. Commendably, the retailer had been thoughtful enough to include a new Varta-branded battery which did the trick. As long as I don't push the distance to the camera beyond 4 to 5 metres and avoid blocking obstacles, shutter operation works flawlessly with my K-3, one of the Pentax DSLRs with front and back IR receptors. There's even a second button that allows for (re)focussing, which works too. Haven't tested it in extreme environments, for which it is clearly not made, but bar stepping on it or immersing it into water, it should be perfectly fine.

Bottom line: Happy as a camper with it. Clear recommendation.

Pros: Inexpensive
Cons:

A good, simple, basic remote. I've had mine ten years and it's worked flawlessly with both my K10D and K-3.

Pros: Small, inexpensive
Cons: Doesn't work with any of my Pentax cameras

I bought 2 of these to use with my Pentax DSLRs and Q7. Only one of them worked, and only from within 3 feet in front of the camera. I replaced the batteries, but then neither of them worked. I finally bought a used Pentax brand Remote C and it works perfectly. I'm throwing the JJC remotes away. Fortunately, I didn't pay much, then again, I didn't get much either.

Pros: Inexpensive, works with K-x, K-r, and K5
Cons: None

It works, takes a common button battery (CR2025), typically comes with a nice velcro closure case, and because it only has 2 buttons its easier to store without running the battery down than the other cheap F replacement remote. Now that I have the K5 this is even a better deal. The W/T button works the AF button feature on the K5!!

UPDATE: I have 2 wired remotes and use them occasionally, but I rely on these JJC remotes for most of my needs.

I don't have an F remote to compare them to, but these JJC remotes are 1.5in x 3.25in x.25in.

I just took 4 pictures rather quickly with the Q & the JJC RM-E7 remote. They were all from behind the Q and were ~4 feet from the back of the camera. I can confirm that both buttons work on the Q, just as they do for the K-5.
