Pros: | Tough, better stability. | Cons: | Threads can get clogged with dirt | | I also have the older aluminum Manfrotto 055 XProB which I had a love/hate relationship with until I got these spikes. The 'hate' was its lack of minute vibration stability when used as a landscape tripod, particularly with longer lenses. I can't get over how much sharper my results are even with a 300mm just by using the metal spikes. I live in an area where I am shooting on hard earth or rock 99% of the time, so I really didn't believe these spikes would help the tripod perform better than the original rubber caps but they really do. I'm not sure how much help they would be on very soft ground that begs for longer penetrating spikes, but this upgrade effectively gave me a new tripod. These are definetly worth the upgrade if you aren't going to go for a tripod with legs that have threaded sockets for interchangeable feet/spikes. The 9 out of 10 is simply because these retractible feet can get jammed up with dirt so care needs to be taken to clean the metal tips before lowering the rubber feet to shield the tips. The metal tips are actually quite sharp, so regularly lowering the rubber feet for storage or to prevent tears in a tripod bag seems a good idea.

Pros: | Easy to install, versatile, add an inch to height | Cons: | not standard on tripod to begin with | | The Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod is a terrific unit but it comes with studio feet. Given that I occasionally use it outdoors the lack of retractile spikes has been an issue a couple of times. My children asked for a list this Christmas and I put these on it. Well they got them for me. Nice set of three with a small Phillips head screwdriver included so no waiting to find a tool to put them on
Easy installation, friction fit with a screw clamp built into the unit. Long throw on the retracting spike. They add 1 inch to the height of the tripod over the original studio feet that came with the tripod.
Nice addition to an already very useful and well designed tool. | |
