The Manfrotto 498rc2 ball head is a step up from 496rc2 in both usability and load capacity. The addition of the panning feature makes this head much more user friendly for tripod use. The friction knob allows more control when setting the camera position when a heavy lens is attached. The quick release system holds the camera or lens securely to the head. I can highly recommend this ball head.
Note - I have done a review of the 496RC2 ball head also, as I own and use both.
