Manfrotto Gimbal Head
supersize

Description:
This is a good option if you need a gimbal head for big telephoto lenses. Where the Wimberly gimbals are elegant (but expensive), this is more of a 'brute force' solution but it does the job. I use mine with the SMC 1000/8 & F* 600/4

The head consists of two beefy U shaped brackets: the larger (outer) bracket attaches to the tripod legs while the smaller (inner) bracket accepts the lens attachment plate.

For some reason, catalog photos of this head often show the lens suspended from the smaller bracket which is swung skyward. I can't imagine why anyone would set it up that way (and I suspect those photos have scared off any number of prospective buyers.)

Set up as shown in the photo here it works very well.

UPDATE: I just read an article in which the author notes that this head has a tendency to "wobble" from side to side of the (horizontal) pivot. That's true--there is a point in the tightening where it pivots without wobbling but that point is lost as soon as you move the lens. I deal with that issue by grabbing the side of the head with my left hand an applying a bit of downward pressure.

Pros: Handles large, heavy prime lens
Cons: Restricted access if camera is mounted on gimbal plate

Work's great with my Pentax A* 400 EDIF. Very stable platform and good balance. I use my Bogen 3126 fluid head for small lens as the gimbal arms restrict your hands trying to access camera functions.
