Purchased new back in '01 and basically didn't shoot almost 10 years. The only wear-n-tear was from dust sitting in the garage. With my K5 w/grip & Tammy 70-200 2.8 placed at less than optimum angles, the head will move even when the tension knob is cranked down.
The ball doesn't provide enough surface to hold a heavy load unless it's positioned vertically. When placed horizontally, a substantial lens will cause it to "pan" downwards. Since there's only one control for all movements, it's a pain to pan from left to right without upsetting any other adjustment.
